INTRODUCTION

Social work is both a practice-based profession and an academic discipline, therefore as part of
MSW curriculum the first year MSW students of Vimala College (Autonomous) Thrissur had
completed the First Semester Concurrent Agency Field Work under Kerala Solid Waste
Management Project (KSWMP) DPMU. On the curriculum field work was included Know you
community, Observation visits to governmental and non- governmental organizations, Rural
Camp, Concurrent Agency field work. Through the concurrent field work Trainee visited Know
Your Community visited the agencies Panchayat office, Village office, ICDS center, Police
station, Primary health center, Old age home, kudumbasree unit, Religious institution. Trainee
also completed the presentation of “know your community”.

Trainee conducted an observation visit to Governmental and non-governmental organizations


working in the field of social justice and welfare agencies – St. Cristina‟s home, St. Joseph‟s
mental health care home, St. Christina‟s home, Pope Paul mercy home, Pope John Paul peace
home, NEST D e- addiction center.

Trainee participated in the 7 days rural camp „UDAYAM „at Vazhachal, partnering with Kerala
Forest and Wildlife department from 16/08/2024 to 22/08/2024. A survey conducted among two
tribal communities Malayar and Kadar.

The Concurrent Agency Field work under the agency Kerala Solid Waste management Project
(KSWMP) DPMU, Thrissur Under the supervision of Mrs.Shubitha Menon, Social cum
communication expert, DPMU Thrissur District. The concurrent agency filed work was started
from 09/08/2024 to 19/10/ 202
OBJECTIVES

 Study the organizational structure, objectives and functions of the organization and assist
the agency in its day to day and ongoing activities.
 Understand the problems of marginalized individuals, groups and communities.
 Understand the functioning and programmes of governmental and non governmental
organizations involved in welfare and developmental activities for vulnerable groups.
 Develop sensitivity towards the needs and problems of different target groups.
 Acquire skills in communication – presentation and reporting of observed realities,
documentation, writing field work reports and public relation skills.
 Learn to integrate theoretical knowledge in the field work activities.
PROFILE OF THE AGENCY

Kerala Solid Waste Management Project ( KSWMP)


The Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP) implemented by the Government of
Kerala through the Department of Local Self-Government in collaboration with the World Bank
and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). To strengthen waste management services
in Kerala cities and prepare modern scientific and technological systems. Time span in 2021 –
2027. The development objective of the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project is to strengthen
the institutional and service delivery systems for SWM in Kerala.

The project comprises of three components. The first component is institutional development,
capacity building, and project management. To make Kerala‟s development journey sustainable
and to make Kerala‟s cities cleaner, healthier, and more livable. In all 93 urban local bodies of
Kerala.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE OF THE AGENCY


ACTIVITIES

ORIENTATION

Trainee got orientation about „Kerala Solid Waste Management Project‟ (KSWMP) the session
was taken by Ms. Subitha Menon, Social cum communication expert and Mr. K.K Manoj,
Municipal secretary cum district swachhata mission coordinator.

AWARENESS CLASS

Trainee participated awareness class about Sanitary Waste Management, Facilitated by JPHN
Ms. Jisha introduced the use of Menstrual cup and attended awareness session on the topic of
HIV led by Ms. Nisha, counsellor of ICTC.

HARITHA KARMA SENA

Trainee get awareness about various ULBs MCFs and RRFs Haritha karma Sena members
collect biodegradable and non- biodegradable waste from houses and shops, For the purpose of
segregation and recycle. Trainee interacted with Haritha Karma Sena workers and collected their
profile for skill assessment. And home visits with HKS. To understand the problems faced by
them while working in the field.

SKILL ASSESSMENT SURVEY

Trainee conducted skill assessment survey among the Haritha karma Sena members. The skill
assessment survey includes the basic details of their family members, income and their skills in
various areas which include art, literature, and creative skills.

AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS
Trainee participated the part of „SWACHHATA HI SEVA 2024 Campaign‟ and the „KSWMP
Citizen Engagement App downloading Campaign‟ at Sky walk, Thrissur for the awareness about
the app.

SANITARY WASTE MANAGEMENT SURVEY

Trainees visited Mar Dionysius College, Pazhanji and St. Mary‟s College, Thrissur to study the
awareness of sanitary waste management facilities available within the colleges. The trainee
conducted interviews with the cleaning staff using a prepared checklist.

DIGITAL MAGAZINE

Trainee collected the article works from the exchange members to prepare a digital magazine.
Trainee as a team members of Malayalam typing, did type of the literature works and made some
corrections in their works to alleviate the spelling errors.

FIELD VISITS

Trainee done field visits various MCFs and RRF under ULB‟s in Thrissur district. Also visited
Wadakkanchery Municipality, Kodugallur Municipality, Guruvayur Municipality, Chalakudy
Municipality. Green park Kunnamkulam, Biopark Guruvayur to understant the solid waste
management. Visited SN Mundathicode Anganwadi 149 division no 39 under wadakkanchery
municipality, to understanding the functions of ICDS. Visited two Colleges for survey on
sanitary waste management. Visited Bio- mining plant, De- watered composting plant.
EVALUATION

As part of Concurrent Agency field work the trainee was field work at Kerala Solid Waste
Management Project (KSWMP) from 9th August 2024 to 19th October 2024. This internship
helped the trainee to gain knowledge about diverse field, link the theoretical knowledge gained
from classroom in practical and also enhanced and sharpened the skills that are essential for
being a professional social worker.

The trainee has made a significant progress in achieving the learning objectives during the
Concurrent Field Work through engagement in various activities and strong commitments
towards learnings and professional growth the trainee was able to make progress and gain
insights on diverse fields.

The leaning objectives accomplished by the trainee, learned the objectives and functions of the
organization and assist the agency in its day to day and ongoing activities. Also learned and
understood Kerala Solid Waste Management Project. During the concurrent field work the
trainee have attitude change The trainee engaging with diverse individuals of different age,
gender, culture demonstrated the ability to work with various disciplines. During the fieldwork
practicum, the trainee learned about the functioning of various Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
Trainee values and attitudes changed as a result of working with individuals and groups. While
engaging in fieldwork, the trainee gained an understanding of the physical and emotional
challenges faced by HKS during waste collection. This experience influenced the trainee‟s
personal attitude and values, as they interacted with HKS through home visits.

Throughout the practicum, the trainee encountered problems related to the physical and
emotional issues of HKS, as well as the attitudes of some uncooperative individuals. The
fieldwork also provided valuable lessons in professionalism, including how to create rapport
with people. Additionally, the trainee improved their communication skills through interactions
with a diverse group of individuals and developed observation, documentation, and reporting
skills. The trainee also learned about group coordination and the importance of teamwork. The
trainee also understood the relevance of solid waste management and sanitary waste
management.

This Field work experience helps the trainee to gain knowledge and enhance their cultural
competence and social awareness through various exposure acquired from the field. The
concurrent field work aims to facilitate the transition of learings acquired from classrooms to
work life.

During the visit to the MCF,RRF and skill assessment of HKS workers, the trainee gained
insight into the problems, needs, and working conditions of HKS workers. Through the skill
assessment and field visits with HKS workers, the trainee understood the challenges they faced.
The field visits provided firsthand experience with the issues faced by HKS workers. Notably,
there has been a shift in societal perspective. Previously, people would not provide plastic and
cash to HKS workers, but now most individuals cooperate. However, some issues persist. Some
people still give plastic due to fear of fines. It was observed that most HKS workers did not wear
gloves during collection and segregation. Despite their valuable work, they are eligible for a
salary hike.

SUGGESTIONS

To address the wage issues of HKS.
