SUMMARY.
The plot centers around the emergence of gangs in California, where in order to survive and be respected, you have to rise among the city's gangs. Erin Gruwell, a
new teacher, opted to teach at Woodrow Wilson High School because she felt she could make a difference by changing how people react to racial discrimination. At
the end of the movie, Erin was able to unite her class and based on some of the articles that I have read, it stated that most of her students succeeded in life.
• What is your emotional response to this movie? What did this movie make you feel?
- It made me feel that despite of the situation, if you have a strong will to make a difference in others’ life, you could. Just like with what Erin did, despite
the lack of support from the staff and the students, she was still able to make a movement which made the students love her and make a difference.
• What moments, character/s, or ideas resonated with you while watching this movie? What about them? Why did you connect with them?
- It was with Marcus’ back story, when his childhood friend accidentally killed himself which made the police authorities put him in a juvenile cell that
greatly impacted his upbringing as he gets older. It also gave me goosebumps when he said that his only dream is to become eighteen (18) years old
which prior the pivotal scene through Erin’s move is hard to achieve.
• What is one good or winsome thing you could say about this movie to someone else?
- The later part where Erin was successful in being able to teach Junior and Senior English subject so that she could accompany her students up until
their graduation.
• What major educational issues/ conflicts are being presented in the movie?
- That there are some teachers that would leave a student that is not aligned with his/her values or belief. This personal bias greatly affects the students
which may hinder them showcasing their full potential since there are educators who favors some students which they could get something from.
REVIEW.
How do you transfer the reflections you gained in your own context (as a future teacher in a particular area)?
- This is an eye opener for me especially that I am choosing the path into teacher hood. This made me become aware that personal bias must be put
aside and be professional since that is the path I opt to choose. No one forced me to choose this path, that means, I need to uphold with the ethical
standards that are affixed to it.
