Motivation letter

My name is Dessalegn Ayehu, and I would like to express my interest in applying for the short-
term research grants by DAAD. Currently, I am a third year Ph.D. student in Space Physics at
Washera Geospace and Radar Science Research Laboratory, Bahir dar University.
Since my high school days I have developed strong interest in natural science fields, specially
physics and chemistry subjects. I have completed the Ethiopian Secondary Leaving Certificate
Examination with a very great distinction and joined Debub University, Ethiopia to study
Physics in first degree program, where I have finished second of my class.
With regard to my devotion after graduation, I was fully employed at the department of Physics,
Mekelle University as an assistant lecturer, where I have taught intermediate Physics courses.
My passion for Space Physics started during this time when I realized that an understanding of
atmospheric phenomena requires a knowledge of several disciplines, including plasma physics,
chemical kinetics, atomic theory, and fluid mechanics. Hence, I have joined Addis Ababa
University for postgraduate program (M.Sc) and specialized in Space Physics. I have taken
advanced Physics, Mathematics, and Computational courses in this program in addition to thesis
work on "Ionospheric Scintillation Measurements observed in Ethiopia region" using data from
ground-base GPS receivers. I have gained basic knowledge about the structure, chemistry,
dynamics, and energetic of the terrestrial ionosphere and how space weather affects space-borne
or ground based technological systems and endanger human health or life during my thesis work.
Moreover, I have developed experiences on space science researches and working with
algorithms for data analysis throughout the program.
Since 2009, after completion of my study, I have worked as lecturer at both Mekelle and Bahir
Dar Universities for twelve years. In addition to teaching advanced Physics courses and advising
students in their senior projects, I have participated in different Space science related researches.
I have also granted two research funds from Mekelle University. Furthermore, I have conducted
research work on "Astronomical Observatory Site Testing" project in highlands of Ethiopia for
about five years where I have been appointed as a junior scientist. My responsibility in the
project was installing scientific instruments, collecting and analyzing data. During the site testing
project, I have acquired good experiences in working with different team of researchers and very
harsh environment. I also have developed an interactive software program that can be used for
analysis of astronomical and weather data of the project using Math Lab.
A combination of my prior knowledge and teaching and research experiences persuaded me to
further upgrade my specialization, Space Physics, through a Ph.D. program at Bahir Dar
University. My Ph.D. title is "Dependence of the post-sunset equatorial ionospheric irregularities
on the bottom-side vertical gradient of electron density and thermospheric neutral wind speed".
My current research project focuses on "the dependence of the pre-midnight and post-
midnight vertical plasma drifts and equatorial spread F (ESF) on the E- and F-region
thermospheric neutral winds" using simultaneous measurements from ICON satellite and
ground-based instruments deployed at Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP),
University of Rostock, German. My reasons to be hosted at IAP are numerous but to put it in a
nut-shell: I strongly believe that IAP is well-established institution in the field of atmospheric
physics and offers high-level of trainings in my research project. Experts' proficiency, at IAP, in
this proposed working plan will be priceless assets to my research activities. Carrying out this
research work in collaboration with senior researchers at IAP will play tremendous role in
providing expert level skills and working knowledge. It will also create an excellent opening for
improving my research practices and acquiring a diverse set of transformable and research skills.
This will in turn advance my career that position me to make outstanding contributions in space-
weather and related problems. Besides the importance of the program it plays to develop my
professional experiences, it helps me to acquire cultural, social and traditional values in
Germany.
IAP has accepted my application to carry out research works in the Radar Remote Sensing
Department if I get a research grant from funding organizations. Hence, I found the German
Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the right organization to support my research project,
which is part of doctoral study at home University, since I plan to carry out the research in
Germany in coordination with an academic supervisor at IAP. Therefore, based on the academic
background, teaching and research experiences, and strong passion to conduct research project at
IAP, I hope you will give me a research grant.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to join IAP in 2025.

Sincerely,

Dessalegn Ayehu
