"La planète sur laquelle nous vivons est la seule planète vivante que nous connaissons.
Pour en tirer le meilleur parti, nous devons la protéger."
Today, I want to talk about the issues arising from the impact of climate change on
agriculture worldwide. I am presenting this as a member of the <Association Action
Inclusive>. Action Inclusive is an organization that works for interculturality, proximity, and
social connection. Founded in 2011, our association implements social entrepreneurship
projects, encourages local initiatives, and seeks solutions to socio-cultural issues.
Climate change refers to long-term changes in the average weather patterns of a specific
region or the entire planet. These changes include variations in temperature, precipitation,
wind, and other climatic elements. Over the past 100 years, the global climate has warmed
by approximately 0.5°C due to greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. This
warming trend continues due to increased economic activities and higher greenhouse gas
emissions.
Scientists agree that climate change is happening now and will continue to intensify in the
future. The primary causes include human activities (burning fossil fuels, deforestation,
industrial activities, and agriculture) and natural factors (volcanic activity, solar variations,
ocean currents).
Climate change significantly impacts agriculture, causing changes in soil and water regimes,
reducing agricultural production, and jeopardizing food security. Long-term effects include
stress on water resources, soil degradation, worsening conditions of agricultural lands,
widespread desertification, proliferation of pests and diseases, and damage to coastal
ecosystems due to rising sea levels.
We already feel the effects of climate change: intense heat waves, longer fire seasons,
droughts, and floods. New NASA research suggests that high greenhouse gas emissions
could decrease global crop yields for maize, corn, and soybeans as early as 2030. By 2069-
2099, global corn crop yields could drop by 24%. These changes are likely even if we
significantly reduce emissions.
**There are thousands of ways to support agriculture and mitigate climate change:**
We should educate others, raise awareness, and support policies that promote sustainable
agriculture.
This tool helps individuals recycle food waste efficiently, turning it into nutrient-rich compost
for personal or community gardens. It addresses food waste, supports local agriculture, and
promotes sustainable living practices. The system speeds up the composting process and
uses filters to minimize odors. Our goal is for this system to be used everywhere:
universities, public restaurants, and homes.
Accompanied by a mobile app called ForPlanet, this system provides guidance, tips, and
notifications for maintaining the compost bin. It tracks the amount of food waste composted
and shows environmental impacts like carbon savings. The app offers advice on reducing
food waste and allows users to share composting tips.
The system also tracks composting activity, the weight and type of food waste composted,
and rewards users with points. These points can be redeemed for discounts on eco-friendly
brands like Eco-Roots, which specializes in sustainable zero-waste products. Users can also
donate their points to environmental charities.
I am collaborating with Action Inclusive, Microsoft AI for Earth Program, and hopefully Yıldız
Teknik University to test and improve the prototype based on feedback. Follow us on social
media and join our journey.
"Once we start to act, hope is everywhere. Instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then,
and only then, will hope come." – Greta Thunberg. One person can make a difference; we
should panic, feel fear, and act immediately. As we've discussed today, the impact of climate
change on agriculture is undeniable, and the consequences are far-reaching. But we have
the power to make a difference. Each of us, as individuals and as a community, can take
action to support sustainable agriculture and mitigate climate change.
Let's commit to making small changes in our daily lives, whether it's reducing food waste,
supporting local farmers, or advocating for policies that promote sustainability. Together, we
can create a brighter future for ourselves and future generations.
I urge you to join me in this journey towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
Together, let's be the change-makers our planet needs. Thank you for listening
