1 Explain the procedure for designing an axially loaded unsymmetrical welded section.

2 What is an eccentric loaded welded joint? Discuss the procedure for designing such a joint. 5 A 1
Two mild steel tie bars for a bridge structure are to be joined by a double cover butt joint. The
thickness of the tie bar is 20 mm and carries a tensile load of 400 kN. Design the joint if the
3 allowable stresses are: σt = 90 MPa; τ = 75 MPa and σc = 150 MPa. Assume the strength of rivet in 5 AN 1
double shear to be 1.75 times that of in single shear. [Ans. b = 150 mm; d = 27 mm; n = 6; η = 90%]
Design a double riveted butt joint with two cover plates for the longitudinal seam of a boiler shell 1.5
m in diameter subjected to a steam pressure of 0.95 N/mm2. Assume joint efficiency as 75%,

allowable tensile stress in the plate 90 MPa; compressive stress 140 MPa; and shear stress in the
5 A 1
rivet 56 MPa.
Design the longitudinal joint for a 1.25 m diameter steam boiler to carry a steam pressure of 2.5
N/mm2. The ultimate strength of the boiler plate may be assumed as 420 MPa, crushing strength as
5 650 MPa and shear strength as 300 MPa. Take the joint efficiency as 80%. Sketch the joint with all 5 AN 1
the dimensions. Adopt the suitable factor of safety.
A single cylinder, single acting, four stroke oil engine develops 20 kW at 300 r.p.m. The work done
by the gases during the expansion stroke is 2.3 times the work done on the gases during the
6 compression and the work done during the suction and exhaust strokes is negligible. The speed is to 5 AN 1
be maintained within ± 1%. Determine the mass moment of inertia of the flywheel.
A multi-cylinder engine is to run speed of at a constant load at a sp 600 r.p.m.. On drawing the crank
effort diagram to scale of 1m 250 N-m and 1 mm 5', the areas in sq mm above and below the mean
torque line are as follows: +160, 172, 168, 191, 197, -162 sq mm. The speed is to be kept within ±
1% of the mean speed of the engine. Calculate the necessary moment of inertia of the flywheel.
7 Determine suitable dimensions for cast iron flywheel with a rim whose breadth is twice its radial 5 A 1
thickness. The density of cast iron is 7250 kg/m³, and its working stress in tension is 6 N/m² Assume
that the rim contributes 92% of the flywheel effect.
An otto cycle engine develops 50 kW at 150 r.p.m. with 75 explosions per minute. The change of
speed from the commencement to the end must not exceed 0.5% of mean on either side. Design a
suitable rim section having width of power stroke four times the depth so that the hoop stress does
8 not exceed 4 N/mm². Assume that the flywheel stores 16/15 times the energy stored by the rim and 5 A 1
that the work done during power stroke is 1.40 times the work done during the cycle. Density of rim
material is 7200 kg/m^3
The cylinder of a four-stroke diesel engine has following specifications Brake power = 7.5kW, Speed
1400 rpm. Indicated mean effective pressure = 0.35MPa Mechanical efficiency = 80% Maximum gas
pressure = 3.5MPa. The cylinder liner and head are made of grey cast iron FG 260 (S ut =260
N/mm^ 2 and mu = 0.25) The studs are made steel 40C8 \ S yt = 380N / m * m ^ 2). The factor of
safety for all parts is 6. Calculate
(i) bore and length of cylinder liner AN

Determine the dimensions of cross-section of the connecting rod for a diesel engine with following

Design a center crankshaft for a single cylinder vertical engine using following data: Cylinder bore
= 125mm (L / r) ratio = 4.5 Maximum gas pressure = 2.5MPa Length of stroke = 150mm Weight of
12 flywheel cum belt pulley = 1kN Total belt pull = 2kN Width of hub for flywheel cum belt pulley = 5 A 2
200 mm. The torque on the crankshaft is maximum when crank turns through 25° from top dead N
center and at this position the gas pressure inside the cylinder is 2 MPa. The belts are in horizontal
direction. Assume suitable data and state the assumptions you make.
The torque developed by an engine is given by following equation:
T=14 250 + 2200sin 2theta - 1800cos 2theta where T is the torque in N-m and 8 is the crank angle

the radius of the flywheel disk.
A transmission shaft rotating at 720 rpm and transmitting power from pulley P to spur gear G is
shown in Fig. 15.8 (a). The belt tensions and the gear tooth forces are as follows: P₁=498 N P₂=166
14 N P₁=497 N P, = 181 N. The weight of the pulley is 100 N. The diameter of the shaft at bearings B, 5 A 2
and B, is 10 mm and 20 mm respectively. The load factor is 2.5 and the expected life for 90% of the
bearings is 8000 hr. Select single-row deep groove ball bearings at B₁ and B2
A helical pinion is mounted on a vertical shaft and the shaft is supported on a hydrostatic foot step

The pinion transmits 75 kW power at 500 rpm. The normal module and the transverse module are 6

of recess diameter to shaft diameter is 0.70.

Calculate:
(i) diameter of the shaft;
(ii) diameter of the recess:
(iii) supply pressure.
Select the viscosity of lubricating oil so that the minimum oil film thickness is 20 microns and the
power lost in pumping and friction taken together is minimum.
The controlling force curve of a spring-controlled governor is a straight (16) line. The weight of each
governor ball is 40 N and the extreme radii of rotation are 120 mm and 180 mm. If the values of the

controlling force at the above radii be respectively 200 N and 360 N and the friction of the
mechanism is equivalent to 2 N at each ball. Find (a) the extreme equilibrium speeds of the governor,
(b) the equilibrium speed and the coefficient of insentiveness at a radius of 150 mm.
16 Explain in detail the working of following with simple sketch:
i) Vibrometer
ii) Accelerometer
iii) FFT Analyzer
The length of the upper and lower arms of a porter governor is (16) 200 mm and 250 mm
respectively. Both the arms are pivoted on the axis of rotation. The central load is 150 N, the weight
of each ball is 20 N and the friction of the sleeve together with the resistance of the operating gear is
equivalent to a force of 30 N at the sleeve. If the limiting inclinations of the upper arms to the vertical
are 30° and 40°, taking friction in to account, find the range of speed of the governor.
A helical valve spring is to be designed for an operating load range of 90N to 135N.The deflection of
the spring for this load range is 7.5mm. Assuming a spring index of 10, a permissible shear stress of
480 N/mm² and a modulus of rigidity of 0.8 x 105 N/mm² for the material, determine the dimensions
of the spring.
The connecting rod of the petrol engine is to be designed for the (16) following data

If the connecting rod is to be made of 40 Crl steel, find the dimensions of the I section of the
connecting rod.
