Project Title: “Chilled Water Supply”

Course Coordinator: Dr. Nesrine Gaaliche

2024-2025 (Semester 1)

1. Solve simple fluid statics problems

2. Apply the Bernoulli Equation and the associated energy equations to solve advanced fluid
momentum transfer problems
3. Use specialist level skill to specify suitable pumps, fans and compressors for industrial use
4. Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understand of the operation of hydraulic and
pneumaticsystems and associated equipment
5. Propose solutions to advanced hydraulic and pneumatic applications
Project Title:

Course Coordinator:
A fresh young graduate from Bahrain polytechnic came up with an idea to set up a centralized chilled
water plant too supply air-conditioning units at GPIC. The idea being that the chilled water can run
most economically during the night, when electricity is in low demand and the price of electricity is at
it cheapest and the temperature of the air is lowest hence a higher coefficient of performance, thus
storing all that chilled water for use during the day when it is most needed. As part of this process the
chilled water has to be transported to the various air-conditioning plants. To save some money the
job is to be given to some undergraduates during their work experience at the plant. That is, you.
Your design should mainly consist various activities that include pressure drop calculations, selection
of pump, design of venturi meter and selection of check valve, the details of which are shown below:
A. You are to size the pipe lines and to select a suitable pump. The proposed piping layout is as per
the attached schematic. You are given details of the required lengths of pipes and the number of
bends involved to get the chilled water to each of the cooling coils. There are isolating valves
around each piece of equipment so that maintenance work can be carried out. (LOs: 1,2,3,4)
B. You have also been asked to design a venturi flow meter, a form of flow measurement device, to
be installed after the pump so that the total water flow can be measured on a continuous basis.
You will need to demonstrate how the venturi will work. (LOs: 2,3)
C. Select the appropriate check valves which must be fitted before each coil at the supply lines
according to all the engineering parameters of the system. (LOs:2,4,5)

Prepare a PowerPoint presentation file outlining your system design, including pipe and fittings sizing,
pump and motor selection, design of the venturi and selection of the check valves. (LOs: 1,2,3,4,5)

Assessment Details
Assessment Type : Project (including presentation)
Weighting : 30% of the final grade
Late rule : Applied
Type : Individual assessment
Submission details : Soft Copy of PPT file onto Moodle
Due Date : 28-12-2024 11:00pm
Re-Sit rule : No
MUST Pass : No
Learning Outcomes Assessed : 1,2, 3, 4, 5
Proposed schedule for the completion of Project
✓ Understand the system and layout.
✓ Calculate the total pressure drop for the chilled water system by applying Bernoulli’s equation and decide
on type of flow, find friction data for pipe material and calculate friction losses using Moody diagram.
Also, look up tables to find suitable join, fittings (valves) and bend data for pipe flow.
✓ This will be an iterative process, meaning that your first answer may not necessarily be the best answer.
You are required to optimize your design.
✓ Select the pump for its type, size, efficiency, size of electric motor required.
✓ Draw flow vs pressure drop graph; add flow vs pump efficiency graph; overlay input power on this graph.
✓ Finalize the selection of a pump showing various types and their attributes
✓ Design a venturi meter to measure the fluid flow of the pump. Show a complete drawing schematic with
all relevant dimensions.
✓ Present various types and selection criteria for check valves according to the pumping system and final
selection for valve type and its characteristics
✓ Show your final system design with all calculations clearly
✓ Mention appendices and reference all tables and data sources used
Clear Instructions Project Presentation:
• Each student must prepare a presentation file by using any software tool such as Microsoft PowerPoint
(or any other presentation software)
• A minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 slides to be prepared for the presentation file.
• To complete this part of the assessment, you MUST attend a 1-to-1 Q&A session physically within the
classroom at a specified date and time where you will be answering the questions and comments on your
presentation for about 5 to 10 minutes. The schedule will be provided to you in later time.
• The Presentation file must be submitted onto the Moodle link on or before the due date

EN7917 Fluid Mechanics_Project

• This presentation file must contain slides with the following information:
Heading To include
Summary You may want to write this section last as it is a summary of your final design. List the pipe and fitting
that you decided upon, the pump and motor, and a short description of the venturi.
Introduction of In the introduction you can state what it is you are designing, what is the extent of the design, and why
the project you are designing it. Keep it brief
Pressure drop Provide enough information so as to show your understanding of the concepts and how they are applied
calculations to this system:
• Apply Bernoulli’s equation to decide on type of flow
• Find friction data for pipe material
• Use moody diagram to calculate friction losses
• Look up tables to find join, fittings (valves) and bend data for pipe flow
Include a complete final set of calculations. The rest of the calculation can be put into the appendix
Venturi design Provide information on the design of the venturi meter, how a venturi meter work. Give an example of
the calculations involved in measuring flow. Show a sketch of your venturi meter complete with relevant
dimensions. Give details of the efficiency and the pressure loss that may be expected.

Pump selection Inside your report, show your final pump selection and how you got to it.
• Which pump type is best suited
• What size to use
• What is its efficiency,
• What size electric motor is required?
Pump curves For the pump selected:
• Draw a flow versus Pressure drop graph.
• Add a flow verses pump efficiency graph,
• overlay input power on your graph
Selection of check Show your final check valves selection and how you got to these
valves Be sure that you will refer to:
• Specific type of the valves
• Selection criteria according to the engineering parameters of our system.
Appendix This is where you can place neat copies of your intermediate steps in doing your calculations. A good
place to show the process you went through to get to your final proposal.
Bibliography This is where you should list reference materials and books used to compile your report. List references
in alphabetical order according to the author’s surname, and present them in the APA format:

Note: If a student fails to submit his/her presentation file (soft copy) on to Moodle up to the due date, he/she will neither
be allowed to present his/her project nor be allowed to attend 1-to-1 Q&A session and will be marked as ZERO for this
assessment.
