Ball Mastery: Attacking 1v1 Warm Up

This Warm Up Develops Players Fundamental Movements And Reactions.
Key Coaching Points
Body shape - Players should focus on having their knees bent, be side on and use their arms to avoid their
opponent.

Explosiveness - When engaging defenders players should be explosive to move away and doge their opponent
to avoid being tagged.

Agility, Balance and Coordination - Vital for players to practice their ABC movement whilst on the ball to
improve feet and hip coordination and proprioception.

Set Up
Players are in pairs & play against each other attempting to tag each other’s legs/knees to score a point. Rotate
players to face different players & keep score.

This Technical Practice Allows Players To Develop Ability To Dominate The 1 Vs. 1 When Attacking
Key Coaching Points
Attack the defender - The attacker should look to accelerate once receiving the football and dribble at the
defender to increase the pressure on the defensive play to make play unpredictable.

Body shape - Players should focus on having their knees bent, be side on and use their arms to avoid their
opponent whilst taking good positions to attack the space.

Ball mastery skills - To perform skills, attackers must consider the timing and execution of the skill whilst
accelerating towards the defender and eventually into space behind.

Set Up
Defender (orange) passes the ball to Attacker (white). Attacker attempts to score by dribbling through any of
the gates on the Defender’s line. Defending player attempts to win possession of the ball to score by dribbling
through the gates on the Attackers line. Players swap roles.

This Skill Practice Allows Players To Attack 1 Vs. 1 When Facing The Defender And To Attack The Defender
When Receiving With Their Back To Goal
Key Coaching Points
Awareness of defenders position - Attacker should look to see what position the defender has before taking
advantage with creativity on the ball and exposing space.

Body shape when receiving - When receiving the ball, the attacker must have an open body position to
accelerate forward and utilize all the space available.

Create shooting opportunities - When in position, players can attempt ball mastery moves to create small
spaces for the attacker to shoot on goal as often as possible

Set Up
Two types of attacking 1 vs. 1. 1st practice begins with defender (white) passing to attacker (yellow) then
defender presses & defends with attacker facing front on. If defender wins the ball they attempt to score in
wide small goals 2nd practice begins with attacker A playing to attacker B with back to goal. Defender must
apply pressure & attempt to win the ball. If they win the ball they attempt to score in wide small goals. Rotate
positions of players.

Great Scenario Game Encourages Players To Attack 1 Vs. 1 & Create Scoring Opportunities
Key Coaching Points

Counter Attack - Once gaining possession, the attacker should try to attack quickly to expose defenses
whilst exploiting spaces.

Movement - Attackers need to use inventive movement away from the ball to expose 1v1 situations as often as
possible.

Ball Mastery - Players should be encouraged to perform skills and tricks to beat their opponents when in 1v1
situations, looking to expose space around and behind the defender.

Set Up
GK at each end & encourage players to dominate 1 vs. 1 in attack to apply principles of attacking 1 vs. 1 from
the session within the small sided game.
