CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of SIWES
SIWES was established by Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in 1973 to solve the
problem of lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment in industries by
Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions.
The Scheme exposes students to industry based skills necessary for a smooth
transition from the classroom to the world of work. It affords students of tertiary
institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the needed experience in
handling machinery and equipment which are usually not available in the educational
institutions.
Before the establishment of the scheme, there was a growing concern among our
Industrialists that graduates of our Institutions of Higher learning lacked adequate
practical background studies preparatory for employment in Industries. Thus, the
employers were of the opinion that the theoretical education going on in higher
institutions was not responsive to the needs of the employers of labour.
It is against this background that the rationale for initiating and designing the scheme
by the Fund during its formative years – 1973/74 was introduced to acquaint students
with the skills of handling employers equipment and machinery.
Therefore participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the

award of Diploma and Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of
higher learning in the country, in accordance with the education policy of government.

1.2 Aims and Objectives of SIWES

after graduation.
iv. Make the transition from school to the world of work easier and enhance students
contact for later job placement.
v. Provides students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in actual work

4.1 Executive Summary
The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) is a training fund (ITF)
in 1973 to bridge the gap between theory and practical oriented among student in Nigeria
higher institution of learning. Providing for the job practical experience for student as
they are exposed to work method and machineries that may not be available in their
institution.
In 1974, the scheme started with 784 from institution and 104 eligible course by
2008 210 390 student from 219 institution participated in the scheme with over 112
eligible course. However, the rapid growth and exposition of SIWES has covered against
the back drop of the successive economic crises which have affected the smooth
operation and administration of the scheme.
4.2 Challenge Encountered
During my three months SIWES course wasn’t easy at all because at first I was
posted to programme department which was not at all.
I had issue with my supervisor because he is not always at work so most time my
day is just a waste and this discourage me from going every day, I really do not have
problem with transport fare but the aspect of being less busy is one of my big problem.
But I later joined my friends with their activities.

11
CHAPTER FIVE
5.1 Recommendations
I want to appreciate the government for their introduction of SIWES this
programme has helps in motivating student in their course of study and also to increase
their knowledge and understanding.
It is important that the government makes sure that every student have a
supervisor to supervise their work so far at the station. The government should also try to
encourage the student by paying them a token even before the programme ends so as to
sponsor themselves.
5.2 Conclusion
This program has helped me to improve educationally and physical career wise,
so as to become a better person.
This program as indeed helped me to known how to differentiate between the
theoretical and practical aspect of journalism.
