Chapter 3

1. How did they build the bridge?


The animals helped them haul the wooden planks
then they used a pulley system to help the mule and
cow pull the planks into place.
2. How did they transport their stuff to the new place?
They loaded all of their supplies on the cow and the
mule.
3. What did they hear when the dogs ran ahead in the
fields?
They heard the dogs howling loudly as if in pain.
4. What happened to the dogs once they were across
the bridge?
They were badly hurt by the quills of a porcupine
which they tried to attack.
5. What did Jack do to the porcupine?
He shot the porcupine dead with his pistol and
carefully wrapped his handkerchief around its neck
and dragged it to where their mother was waiting.
6. Describe the grove of the trees.
The grove of the trees was truly wonderful. The
trees seemed to be mangroves or wild figs. They
had huge, arching roots that supported the main
trunk above the soil.
7. What did Franz find when he went to search for the
sticks?
He found figs, thousands of them lying in the grass.
8. How did they know that the figs were safe to be
eaten?
The pigeons and the hens were gobbling them up.

9. How did they make use of the porcupine?


They ate the porcupine for their dinner and Father
used the quills to make some needles for sewing by
boring holes at the ends of the porcupine's quills,

10. How did they build a ladder to reach the tallest


branches of their tree?
They used bamboo for the rungs of the ladder and
attached the cut bamboo to rope until the ladder
was long enough.
11. How did he get the ladder to the highest
branch?
By using a bow and arrow, he shot the end of a ball
of string to the ladder. By pulling the other end of
the string, he raised the ladder up to the branch.

12. Describe the Kangaroo they had seen.


It’s the size of a sheep, but it has the tail of a tiger.
Its nose and hair look something like a mouse’s, but
its ears are like a rabbit’s. Its front legs are like
those of a squirrel, but its back legs are like the
tallest stilts.
13. What did they bring home that night?
They brought fish and kangaroo that night.
14. Read and comment on the following
quotations:
“To thank God for getting all of us here safely'
This was said by the mother when the family were trying to
name the different parts of the island and she suggested naming
the bay where they first landed “Providence Bay”.
