4 Notes DAY 1 Writing Equations of Parallel Lines

Lesson: Students will be able to identify if lines are parallel and write equations of parallel lines.

TO Determine if lines are parallel you must find the slope of each line.
If it is a graph, then just count rise over run.

𝑦2−𝑦1
If it is two points, then find the slope of each line using the formula. 𝑚 = 𝑥2−𝑥1

If it is an equation, put each in slope intercept form. (solve for y) y = mx+b

Examples: Determine if the lines are parallel.

a) Line 𝑙
x 12 15 18 21

y -10 14 38 62

Line b
-24x + 3y = 21
b)

Line a line b 3y - 2x = 12

c) Line a (4, -3) and (-2, 1)

Line b (10,60) and (40, 50)

d) Line a (3, 4) and (3, 8)

Line b (-2, 4) and (-2, 11)

e) Line a (2, 5) and (4, 5)

Line b (-1, 7) and (-1, 11)
Writing an equation of a parallel line to the given line in slope intercept form.
Examples:
1.

2.
(5, -6) slope = 5

3.
(-1, 3) 4x + y = 2

4.
Write the equation of a line in standard form that passes through the point (-6 2) and is parallel
to the line 9x - 3y = 5
5. Write the equation of a line in point slope form that is parallel to the line 3y - 7x = 1 and
passes through the point (-8, -2)
