2. Put each verb in brackets into either the present simple or the present
continuous
a) There's nobody here, and the door's locked. What (we do) do we do now!

c) I (look after) am looking after Jack's dog this weekend. (you want) Do you want to take it for a
walk?
e) I (still have) still have a pain in my leg but it (get) is getting better.

i) That plant I bought (not grow) is not growing very much. And I (water) am watering it every day.
j) Which hotel (you stay) are you staying in when you (come) come here?
3. Decide whether the verb form in italics refers to present or future time.
a) Where are you staying on Saturday night? Future

4. Write each verb in the -ing form, then complete the spelling rules below.
write → writing admit → admitting study → studying decide → deciding swim → swimming
annoy → annoying like → liking get → getting begin → beginning try → trying
a) If a word ends in vowel + consonant + -e, drop the -e and add -ing.
Example: write → writing, decide → deciding, like → liking
b) If a word ends in vowel + consonant and is a one-syllable word or stressed on the last syllable,
double the final consonant and add -ing.
Example: swim → swimming, admit → admitting, get → getting, begin → beginning
c) Words that end in -y, just add -ing without changing the -y.
Example: study → studying, try → trying, annoy → annoying
5 Rewrite each sentence. Use a verb from the box to replace the words in
italics.
a)This flower smells wonderful.
b) I feel you are behaving in a very silly way.
c) She is having a baby in the summer.
d) Nancy is thinking of moving to Scotland.
e) Don't go in. They are having a meeting.
f) I am seeing Janet this evening actually.
g) Good clothes are costing more and more.
h) I am tasting the soup to see if it needs more salt.
i) Helen is having a bath at the moment.
j) I think that you would be happier in another job.
