1. Underline the most suitable verb form in each sentence.

2. Put each verb in brackets into either the present simple or the present
continuous

3. Decide whether the verb form in italics refers to present or future time.

4. Write each verb in the -ing form, then complete the spelling rules below.

write → writing admit → admitting study → studying decide → deciding swim → swimming
annoy → annoying like → liking get → getting begin → beginning try → trying

a) If a word ends in vowel + consonant + -e, drop the -e and add -ing.
Example: write → writing, decide → deciding, like → liking

b) If a word ends in vowel + consonant and is a one-syllable word or stressed on the last syllable,
double the final consonant and add -ing.
Example: swim → swimming, admit → admitting, get → getting, begin → beginning

c) Words that end in -y, just add -ing without changing the -y.
Example: study → studying, try → trying, annoy → annoying

5 Rewrite each sentence. Use a verb from the box to replace the words in
italics.
a)This flower smells wonderful.
b) I feel you are behaving in a very silly way.
c) She is having a baby in the summer.
d) Nancy is thinking of moving to Scotland.
e) Don't go in. They are having a meeting.

6. Put each verb in brackets into either the present simple or the present
continuous.

Dear Aunt Jean,

I (1) am just writing to tell you how much I


(2) appreciate the money you sent me, and to tell you
how I (3) am getting on in my first term at university. Actually, I
(4) am really enjoying myself! I (5) am studying
quite hard as well, but at the moment I (6) am spending a lot of
time just making friends. I (7) am still staying with my friend
