QUE.2 Why is decomposition reaction called opposite of
combination reaction?
Ans: In combination reaction two or more substances
combined to form new substance while in decomposition
reaction one substance decomposes into two or more
substances .Hence the decomposition reaction is called
opposite of combination reaction.
QUE.3 What are exothermic and endothermic reaction ?
Explain with examples.
Ans: A reaction in which heat is given out during achemical
reaction is called exothermic reaction.

Chemical reaction is said to be endothermic if the reaction
involves absorption of heat.

N2+O22NO
B) Reduction

Que.8 Explain the electrolysis of water with chemical
reaction.
Ans: When an electric current is passed through water,
it decomposes into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas .This
process is called electrolysis of water.
2H2O+electricity2H2O2
Differentiate between the following
1. A combination reaction and decomposition reaction.
Ans. The combination reaction is a reaction in which two or
more substance combine to form a single substance
under suitable conditions.
The reaction in which a single substance decomposes into two or
more simple substances under suitable conditions are called
decomposition reaction.
2. A double displacement reaction and displacement
reaction.
Ans. A reaction in which different atoms in two different
compounds replace each other is called double
displacement reaction.
A reaction in which a more reactive element displaces a less
reactive element from its compound usually in a solution
form is called displacement reaction.
3. Oxidation and reduction
Ans. Oxidation is the addition of oxygen to a substance or
removal of hydrogen from a substance in a chemical
reaction.
Reduction is removal of oxygen from a substance or addition
of hydrogen to a substance in a chemical reaction.
4. Oxidising and reducing agents.
Ans: A substance which gives oxygen or removes hydrogen in
an oxidation reaction is called oxidizing agent
The substance which gives hydrogen or removes oxygen in
reduction reaction is called reducing agent.
Answer the following in detail:
1.What is meant by chemical reaction ? Elaboratethe
different types of chemical reactions.
Ans. The process which transforms one or more
substances into new substances with new properties is
called chemical reactions.
Types of chemical reactions:
Combination reaction: the reaction in which two or
more substances combine to form a single substance
under suitable conditions are called combination
reaction.
A+B AB
Decomposition reaction :The reaction in which a single
substance decomposes into two or more simple
substance under suitable condition are called the
composition reaction.
ABA+B
Displacement reactions: the chemical reaction in which
one element of a reactant takes the place of another
element present in another reactant is called
displacement reaction or single displacement reaction.
AL+XAX+L
Double displacement reaction: A chemical reaction in
which one component each of both the reactive
molecules get exchanged to form new products is
called double displacement reaction.
AB+CDAD+BC
2.What are oxides ?Explain the classification of
oxides with example.
Ans. Oxides are binary compounds formed by the
reaction of oxygen with other element.
Classification of oxides
Acid oxide: non metal react with oxygen to form acidic
compounds of oxide when combined with water they
produce acids.
SO2+H2OH2SO3
Basic oxide: metal reacts with oxygen to give basic
compounds of oxygen to produce hydroxides.
CaO+H2OCa(OH)2
Amphoteric oxide: metallic oxides which shows both
basic as well as acidic property.
ZnO+2HClZnCl2+H2O
ZnO+2NaOHNa2ZnO2+H2O
Neutral oxides: These are oxides, which show neither
basic nor acidic properties.
Ex .carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide
3.How can you show that decomposition of silver
chloride in sunlight is endothermic reaction?
Ans. Take about 2 g of silver chloride in a China dish
and place it in sunlight for some time. After about 15
minutes it is observed that white crystals of silver
chloride turns to form grey metal. Sunlight consists of
photons which are source of energy . They cause the
decomposition of silver chloride. Thus we conclude
that decomposition reaction requires energyfor
breaking down the reactants. So the reaction is a
endothermic reaction.
2AgCl+ sunlight2Ag+Cl2
(White). ( Grey)
Q 4. a) Can a combination reaction be an oxidation reaction?
Ans. YES
b) How will you test whether the gas evolved in a reaction is
hydrogen?
Ans . When a burning matchstick is brought close to the
mouth of test tube, the gas burns with pop sound.
This confirms that gas present is hydrogen.
c) Why does copper not evolve hydrogen gas on reacting
with dilute sulphuric acid?
Ans. Because copper is less reactive than hydrogen ,
socannot displace hydrogen from sulphuric acid.
