Questions
No
A certain surface has the following absorption properties:
α λ=0.05 0< λ<1.2 μm
α λ=0.50 1.2< λ <3 μm
α λ=0.40 3< λ<6 μm
1 α λ=0.20 6 < λ<20 μm
α λ=0 20< λ<∞ μm

Calculate the total absorptivity of the surface if it is irradiated with blackbody radiation
at 2000K.
Determine total average hemispherical emissivity and the emissive power of a
surface that has 1.5 has a spectral hemispherical emissivity of 0.8 at wave-lengths less
2
than 1.5 μm, 0.6 0.6 from 1.5 to 2.5 μm, and 0.4 at wave lengths longer than 2.5 μm. The
surface temperature is 1111K.
Consider a hemispherical furnace with a flat circular base of diameter D. Determine the
3
view factor from the dome of this furnace to its base.
Calculate the following quantities for an industrial furnace (blackbody) emitting radiation at
2650°C.
i. Spectral emissive power at λ = 1.2 μm,
ii. Wavelength at which the emissive power is maximum.
4
iii. Maximum spectral emissive power,
iv. Total emissive power,
v. Total emissive power of the furnace, if it is treated as gray and diffusebody with an
emissivity of 0.9.
Find the radiation shape factors for all surfaces of a frustum of a cone ( Rbase = 20 cm and Rtop =10
5
cm with height=10 cm).
Consider an enclosure formed by closing one end of cylinder, (dia = D, Height = L) by a flat
6 surface and other end by a hemispherical dome. Determine the view factors of all the surfaces of
the enclosure, if height is the twice the diameter.
Two large parallel planes having emissivities of 0.3 and 0.5 are maintained at temperatures of
900 K and 400 K, respectively. A radiation shield having an emissivity of 0.05 on both sides is
7 placed between the two planes. Calculate (a) the heat-transfer rate per unit area if the shield were
not present; (b) the heat-transfer rate per unit area with the shield present; and (c) the
temperature of the shield.
8 Two parallel plates 0.5 by 1.0 m are spaced 0.5m apart, as shown in Figure. One plate is
maintained at 1000°C and the other at 500°C. The emissivities of the plates are 0.2 and 0.5,
respectively. The plates are located in a very large room, the walls are maintained at 27 °C. The
plates exchange heat with each other and with the room, but only the plate surfaces facing each
other are to be considered in the analysis. Find the net transfer to each plate and to the room.

A cubical room 4m × 4m is heated through the floor by maintaining it at uniform

temperature of 350K, while side walls are insulated. The heat loss takes place through
9
the ceiling at 300K. Assuming that all the surfaces have an emissivity of 0.8, determine
the rate of heat loss by radiation through the ceiling.
Three concentric spheres of 10, 20 & 40 cm radii with innermost at 300K and outermost
at 900K. Find the temperature of intermediate sphere if ε =¿0.3 for all surfaces and
10
assume vacuum in the annular space.
[Answer: 503K]
An enclosure has an inside area of 100 m 2, and its inside surface is black and is
maintained at a constant temperature. A small opening in the enclosure has an area of
11 0.02 m2. The radiant power emitted from this opening is 70 W. What is the temperature
of the interior enclosure wall? If the interior surface is maintained at this temperature but
is now polished, what will be the value of the radiant power emitted from the opening?
A thermocouple (ε =¿0.6) is used to measure the temperature of exhaust gases flowing
into a room. The ambient temperature of the room is 20°C. If the thermocouple measures
a temperature of 500°C, calculate the error between the thermocouple temperature and
12 gas temperature. The thermocouple is then enveloped by a radiation shield ( ε =¿0.3).
Estimate the error between the thermocouple temperature and gas temperature with the
shielded thermocouple arrangement, taking the convective heat transfer coefficient to be
0.2 kW/m2K everywhere in the system.
