Risk factors
- Stress
- Cohabitation
o Couples that cohabitate experience more IPV and more severe IPV than marries
couples
- Power and patriarchy
o There is some evidence that patriarchal norms and structural inequality are
positively related to IPV
o Men who hod patriarchal values have been shown in other research to be more
violent against women
- Social learning theory
o People who grow up in homes where IPV occurs are more likely to be both
perpetrators and victims of IPV
o Individuals who are abused or neglected as children have been shown to be
more likely to engage in IPV later in life
o Individuals who are abused or neglected as children have also been shown to be
more likely to suffer injury due to IPV
- Disability status
o Having a disability places individuals at an increased risk for IPV victimization
- Neighborhoods
o Neighborhood disadvantage – positively related to IPV
o Collective efficacy – is negatively associated with IPV
- Risky lifestyle
o Females who have criminal partners are more likely to be victims of IPV than
females who have prosocial (positively socially associated) intimate partners
o IPV offenders use illegal drugs and drink excessively more others
 Binge drinkers are 3-5x more likely to engage in IPV against females than
those who abstain from drinking
o Women who have histories of IPV have higher rates of substance abuse than
women without such histories

Consequences
- Negative health
o IPV is one of the most common reasons why women present in the emergency
room
 More than 1/3 of women who seek care in the ER for violence-related
injuries do so because they were victimized by a current or former
spouse, bf, or gf
 Female victims more likely to experience frequent headaches,
gastrointestinal problems, back pain, gynecological issues, pregnancy
difficulties, heart disease
- Psychological and emotional
o Victims of IPV are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, sleep disorders,
PTSD
o Female victims of IPV have higher rates of suicide
 Suicide ideation/attempt was about 6-9 times more likely for adolescent
girls who had been sexually or physically hurt by a dating partner than for
girls who did not report such harm
- Revictimization
