12.A circular loop placed in a plane perpendicular to the plane of paper carries a current when the key is ON. The
current as seen from points A and B (in the plane of paper and on the axis of the coil) is anti clockwise and clockwise
respectively. The magnetic field lines point from B to A. The N-pole of the resultant magnet
is on the face close to
(a) A
(b) B
(c) A if the current is small, and B if the current is large
(d) B if the current is small and A if the current is large
13.What is a solenoid? Draw the pattern of magnetic field lines of (i) a current carrying solenoid and (ii) a bar
magnet. List two distinguishing feature between the two fields.
Ans.A coil of many circular turns of insulated copper wire wrapped closely in the shape of a cylinder is called a
solenoid.

Solenoid Bar Magnet

1. Field strength can be changed by 1.Field strength is fixed and cannot be changed.
changing the amount of current.

2.Poles can be interchanged by 2.Poles cannot be interchanged i.e. field direction is fixed.
changing the direction of current .

14.The strength of magnetic field inside a long current carrying straight solenoid is
(a) more at the ends than at the centre
(b) minimum in the middle
(c) same at all points
(d) found to increase from one end to the other
15.(a) What is an electromagnet? List two uses.
(b) Draw a labelled diagram to show how an electromagnet is made.
A current carrying solenoid is called an electromagnet when soft iron is placed inside a solenoid carrying current,
the soft iron piece behaves like a magnet so long as electric current passes through it. The magnet so formed is
electromagnet. Uses -Generators, motors, and transformers

16.Give reasons for the following :
(i) There is divergence of magnetic field lines near the ends of a current carrying straight solenoid.
(ii) The current carrying solenoid when suspended freely rests along a particular direction.
(i)The divergence, that is, the falling degree of closeness of magnetic field lines indicates the fall in strength of
magnetic field near and beyond the ends of the solenoid.
(ii)The current-carrying solenoid when suspended freely rests along a particular direction because it behaves like a
bar magnet as it aligns itself in the north-south direction.
17.Assertion: On freely suspending a current – carrying solenoid, it comes to rest in Geographical N-S direction.
Reason : One end of current carrying straight solenoid behaves as a North pole and the other end as a South pole,
just like a bar magnet.
18.Describe the activity that shows that a current-carrying conductor experiences a force perpendicular to its length
and the external magnetic field. How does Fleming’s left-hand rule help us to find the direction of the force acting
on the current carrying conductor?

19.Name and state the rule to determine the direction of force experienced by a current carrying straight conductor
placed in a uniform magnetic field which is perpendicular to it.
Ans.According to this rule, stretch the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of your left hand such that they are
mutually perpendicular. If the first finger points in the direction of magnetic field and the second finger in the
direction of current, then the thumb will point in the direction of motion or the force acting on the conductor.
20.In activity 13.7, how do we think the displacement of rod AB will be affected if (i) current in rod AB is increased;
(ii) a stronger horse-shoe magnet is used; and (iii) length of the rod AB is increased?
AnsThe displacement of the rod AB will be affected in the following ways
(i) If the current in the rod is increased, then the force in the rod will also increase. Then the rod will be deflected
with greater force as the greater force leads to an increase in displacement.
(ii) If a stronger horse-shoe magnet is used, then also rod will be deflected with greater force due to the increase in
the magnetic field.
(iii) If the length of the rod AB is increased, then the force exerted on the current-carrying conductor will also
increase
21.An alpha particle while passing through a magnetic field gets projected towards north. In which direction will an
electron project when it passes through the same magnetic field?
22.An electron enters a magnetic field at right angles to it, as shown in fig. the direction of force acting on the
electron will be
(a)To the right (b)To the left (c)Out of the page (d)Into the page
