A birthday party is an annual event. It is held to celebrate the day one was
born. Unlike funerals where people mourn their departed dear ones, birthday
parties are celebrations of joy. They are celebrated by both adults and
children.
However, these celebrations are common among children.

Last Saturday, Akumu’s class celebrated her birthday. The class had been
informed a day earlier. A notice about the party had been displayed for the
class by Mr. Lukyamuzi, the class teacher.
“Hello children,” Mr. Lukyamuzi said, “as displayed on the class notice
board, tomorrow will be Akumu’s birthday and we are all invited to join her
in celebration.”

This invitation excited Akumu’s classmates. They talked about a lot of things
that they expected and imagined. All children anxiously looked formed to
enjoying the party.
By 8:00 o’clock the following morning, all the children had arrived at school.
Surprisingly, Benanta, a habitual late comer had also kept time.
Soon, all the pupils converged in the school main hall followed by
their teachers shortly after.
Introducing himself as the day’s master of ceremonies, Mr. Jon Barasa asked
Mark Kigozi, the shortest boy in the class, to lead the gathering in a word of
prayer that would bless the celebration.

On the table laid before the gathering was a large pink and white cake.
Every pupil was excited by the icing on the cake and how tasty it looked.
The pupils enjoyed beverages of different flavours. There was a lot of music
and dancing as the party lasted for about three hours. This was fun indeed
for everybody in attendance.
During his speech towards the end of the party, the class
teacher first congratulated Akumu on making thirteen years
of age.

8
“I am proud of Akumu. Akumu is a true symbol of discipline and humility,” said
Mr. Lukyamuzi.
He then advised the children to emulate her discipline, warning that
whoever misbehaved would not be allowed to be part of any future
class celebrations.
