Field Tests
Standard Penetra"on Test (SPT) was conducted at every 1.5m depth interval in boreholes
as per IS: 2131-1981.
Disturbed Samples (DS) and undisturbed Samples (UDS) were collected as per IS: 1892-
1979.
Core drilling in soD rock, weathered rock and in hard rock has been carried out by
diamond bit of Nx size using double tube core barrels and rock cores are collected.
Ground Water table was observed in each bore hole as per IS: 6935 – 1973
The field explora"on methods, sampling requirements, types and frequency of field tests are
performed based on project design requirements. Accordingly, we have developed the overall
inves"ga"on plan which enables us to obtain the data needed to define subsurface condi"ons and
perform Engineering analysis and design.

5.1. Boring
Drilling of boreholes was carried out at specified loca"ons to obtain informa"on about the subsoil
profile, its nature, strength and also to collect soil samples for strata iden"fica"on and conduc"ng
laboratory tests. The sequence of boring was planned aDer ascertaining preliminary nature of
subsoil profile. Boring is carried out as per the provisions given in IS: 1892-1979.
5.2. Sampling
All the accessories used for sampling and the method of sampling adopted confirms to IS: 2132. All
the disturbed and undisturbed samples collected in the field have been classified at the site as per
IS: 1498.
Disturbed soil samples were collected from bore holes at regular intervals to determine the soil
type, grain size distribu"on, AHerberg limits and soil classifica"on.
Undisturbed sampling was done in accordance with IS:2132-1986. Undisturbed samples will be
collected for every 1.5 m interval or change of strata which ever is less. Undisturbed samples are
collected with tubes of 100mm diameter & 450mm long MS tubes provided with sampler head
with ball check arrangement. Collec"on of undisturbed samples in very hard cohesive soils/dense
granular soils/gravels/cobbles/pebbles/boulders/refusal strata may not be prac"cally possible and
such collected samples will not truly represent the undisturbed condi"ons. The assembled
sampling tube should be lowered to the boHom of the hole and the sampling tube shall then be
pushed into the soil by a con"nuous and rapid mo"on. Undisturbed samples are used to
determine the shear parameters, natural moisture content and unit weight.
AA/HD/2598
Page 4
5.2.3. Transporta%on and storage of samples
The collected undisturbed samples sealed with wax at both ends, have to be taken out of the
liners or tubes for actual tes"ng. This should be done very carefully without causing any
disturbance to the samples themselves. ADer the sample is extruded, it should be kept either in
humidity chamber or in a desiccator and taken out only when actual tes"ng is carried out, to avoid
possible loss of moisture.
Standard Penetra"on Test (SPT) has been conducted at different depths in all boreholes. For
shallow depths SPT was conducted at close intervals of 1.5m. SPT split spoon sampler of standard
dimensions is driven into the soil from borehole using 63.5kg hammer falling from 75cm height.
The SPT hammer is mechanically liDed to the specified height and allowed to fall freely. The
number of blows required to effect each 15 cm of penetra"on shall be recorded. The first 15 cm of
drive may be considered to be sea"ng drive. The total blows required for the second and third 15
cm of penetra"on shall be termed the penetra"on-resistance ‘N’. When the number of blows
exceeded 50, to penetrate the first or second 15cm length of the Sampler, the SPT ‘N’ is regarded
as more than 100 as described in IS: 2131–1981. N value is recorded as refusal when there is no
penetra"on of the sampler. Samples from the SPT split spoon sampler are preserved in polythene
covers and transported to the laboratory.
The degree of density of natural deposited cohesionless soils can be measured in terms of their
rela"ve density. SPT ‘N’ values are correlated with rela"ve density of non-cohesive stratum and
with consistency of cohesive strata.

For drilling in rock, drilling was advanced by rotary core drilling method using double tube core
barrels with TC bit or diamond bit as per the guidelines of IS:6926-1996. The maximum length of
drill run maintained is 1.0m. At the end of each run, the drill rod string with core barrel is
extracted from the Borehole and core is recovered from the core barrel. The percentage of core
recovery is recorded and the core pieces are transferred to the core box duly numbered and
labeled properly. The selected core samples are sent to the laboratory for conduc"ng tests. The
rock core samples are preserved and stored in wooden core boxes as specified in IS:4078 – 1980.
The following system of weathering classifica"on should be followed as per IS: 4464

Following tests were conducted on Undisturbed samples:
i) Sieve Analysis
By observing the nature of subsurface strata, the type of founda"on for a given proposed
structure, expected heavy loads on piers and abutment founda"ons, the following types of
founda"ons can be recommended.
a) Shallow Founda"ons
AA/HD/2598
Page 9
II. The founda"on should not seHle by an amount more than the permissible seHlement.
The smaller of the bearing pressure values obtained according to above (I) and (II), is adopted as
the allowable bearing capacity.
Depth of Analysis:
For foo"ng res"ng on mul"layer deposits, weighted average or average of the ‘C’ and ‘Ø’ values
upto a depth of H = 0.5 B Tan (45 + Ø/2) is considered.
A founda"on must have an adequate depth from the considera"ons of adverse environmental
influences. It must also be economically feasible in terms of overall structure. Depth of founda"on
in soil shall be decided as per Clause 705.2 of IRC 78 for open founda"ons and confirmed with
clause 7 of IS : 1904 for special cases like; where volume change/ scour is expected/ or when
founda"on is to rest on sloping ground/ made or filled up ground/ frost ac"on is expected etc.
Hydrology for the structures is calculated separately and presented whereas, maximum scour
depth based on erodible strata has been worked out and presented in summary of borelog
results itself. If the strata at which founding level arrived based on scour depth is soil, the
founding level has been arrived as explained below:
Founding level = H.F.L – 1.27*dsm (in case of abutments) as per IRC: 78 provisions.
AA/HD/2598
Page 10
Silt Factor
This is important factor for determining the scour depth of erodible strata. It is calculated using
following procedure as per IRC:78 (clause 703.2.2) & as suggested in IRC : 5 (clause 110.1.3)
dm = Mean Diameter in mm
The mean scour depth below Highest Flood Level (HFL) for natural channels flowing over erodible
bed can be calculated as per IRC : 78 (clause 703.2)
Where Db = The design discharge for founda"on per metre width at effec"ve linear
water way
Ksf = Silt factor for a representa"ve sample of bed material obtained upto the
level of an"cipated scour
The minimum depth of Open founda"on shall be upto the stratum having safe bearing capacity
but not less than 2.0m below scour level or protected level as per IRC:78 (Clause 705.2.1)
Floor Protec%on
In case the founda"on has to rest on bed above the an"cipated scour level, scour protec"on/ floor
protec"on has to be done to ensure the bed below the founda"on remains non-erodible.
As per IRC: 78 – 2014, clause 703.3.2, for the design of floor protec"on works for open
founda"ons, the following values of maximum scour depth from Highest Flood level may be
adopted:
AA/HD/2598
Page 11
In a straight reach : 1.27 dsm
As per clause 705.2.2 (a) of IRC:78; for hard rock with an ul"mate crushing Strength of 12.5 MPa or
above, the depth of founda"on shall be 0.60m below rock surface and 1.50m for all other cases.
The embedment of the founda"ons shall be decided keeping in view the overall characteris"cs like
fissures, bedding plans, cavi"es, ul"mate crushing strength, proposed treatment of founda"on
strata etc.
The safe bearing capacity of soil is the net intensity of loading which the founda"on will carry,
without undergoing shear failure and seHlement in excess of the permissible value for the
structure under considera"on.
The net ul"mate bearing capacity immediately aDer construc"on on fairly saturated
homogeneous cohesive soils shall be calculated using following equa"on.
The value of ‘C’ shall be obtained from unconfined compressive strength test or sta"c cone
penetra"on test or triaxial shear (UU) test.
Alterna"vely Net ul"mate bearing capacity can be determined by using the following equa"on;
AA/HD/2598
Page 12
qd = C Nc Sc dc ic ; Where qd = Net ul"mate bearing capacity
Considering Φ = 0, Nc = 5.14
= 2.056 C Sc dc
Net safe bearing capacity is obtained by dividing the above Net Ul"mate bearing capacity by the
factor of safety of 2.5.
As per IS: 12070-1987 & IS: 13365 (Part-1)-1998, analysis for allowable bearing capacity on rock
has been done by the following three methods.
Assessment of net safe bearing pressure can be done based on rock classifica"on as listed in Table
2 of IS: 12070. The presump"ve value for various rock types listed here are mul"plied with the
correc"on factors according to the geological condi"ons as given in Clause 9.2, IS: 12070.
Table 3 in IS: 12070 gives net allowable pressure. This ensures seHlement of founda"on up to 6m
thickness to be less than 12 mm for raD founda"ons.

• Slopes
The total ver"cal load carrying capacity of pile founda"on is a combina"on of skin fric"on
resistance along the surface and end bearing resistance at pile "p, when Piles are installed
through layered soils. The pile design in soD soils has rela"vely high skin fric"on resistance and
granular soils have high end bearing resistance. Generally piles res"ng on sound rock can be
AA/HD/2598
Page 15
loaded to their safe structural capacity. But for the piles res"ng on weathered rock it is necessary
to provide Socke"ng depth. In the present situa"on socke"ng depth has been considered based
on IRC 78-2014. The General prac"ce of calcula"ng Ul"mate Bearing capacity of pile is of following
categories:
c) Ul"mate load capacity calculated from combina"on of both skin fric"on & end bearing
resistance
d) Ul"mate load capacity calculated from end bearing resistance and ul"mate side socket
shear in case of piles res"ng on rock.
The Ul"mate capacity of Pile in soil shall be calculated using following equa"on:
Q u =Q ep +Q sf
Where,
AA/HD/2598
Page 16
Nc = Bearing capacity factor as per IS 2911(Part 1)
Total Safe capacity of the pile in soils is obtained by dividing the ul"mate capacity with a factor of
safety of 2.5 for both end bearing resistance and skin fric"on resistance.

Wp = Weight of Pile
It is important to determine, whether pile will behave as a short rigid element or as an infinity long
elas"c member. This can be done by calcula"ng s"ffness factor R\T, for par"cular combina"on of
pile and soil. The s"ffness factors T and R are given as,
To calculate the safe lateral capacity of long pile, the method explained in IS 2911(Part 1) has been
used.
The ul"mate load carrying capacity may be calculated from one of the two approaches given
below:

Method: 2
This method is applicable when cores or core tes"ng results are not available or when geo-
material is highly fragmented. The shear strength of geo-material is obtained from its correla"on
with extrapolated SPT values for 300mm of penetra"on as given in table below. Also for weak rock
like Chalk, mudstone, claystone, shale and other intermediate rocks this method is preferred.
