or W (wrong).
At some stage, we’ll need to find a new home. That’s what Stephen Hawking believed anyway. The famous
scientist warned that, mainly because of global warming, humans will need to leave Earth within 600 years!
Other experts worry about wars, food resources and overpopulation, but the question remains: where can
we move to?
Wherever we move, we’ll need oxygen, water and a suitable temperature to survive. Let’s start with our
next-door neighbours: Venus and Mars. Venus has an average temperature of 464°C, which is far too hot,
but Mars’ average temperature of -63°C is similar to conditions in the Antarctic. Also, Mars has some water
– most of it underground ice. It’s not ideal, but it seems like Mars is the best option we’ve got.
However, we don’t really know much about the ‘Red Planet’ - and that’s where Curiosity comes in.
Designed by NASA, Curiosity is a rover (a space exploration vehicle) which explores an area of Mars called
the Gale Crater. It has six large wheels and can move up to 200 metres a day. Also, it uses 17 cameras to
monitor climatic conditions, and look for things of interest. Curiosity has various tools to collect and analyse
rock and soil samples. For example, when it comes across an interesting rock, it can drill a small hole in it,
use a laser to cut off a small piece of it, and then analyse it in a mini-lab inside the rover. Then, it can send
the data back to scientists on Earth.
Curiosity started exploring Mars in August 2012. At first, it was a two-year mission – NASA didn’t expect the
robot to survive for so long! But despite some damage to its wheels, Curiosity is still working perfectly, and
NASA has no plans to end its mission. At some point in the near future, it’s likely that a human will land on
Mars, and the data which Curiosity collects is making this more and more possible. As for humans moving
to the Red Planet, that could take a lot longer.
1 Mars is more suitable than other planets for human life. ______
2 Curiosity is a space vehicle which moves at fast speeds. ______
3 Curiosity is able to examine samples by itself. ______
4 Curiosity can cut things with its robotic arm. ______
5 Curiosity will continue working until it breaks down. ______
