COUNTERCLAIMS

are claims made to rebut a previous claim. They provide a contrasting

perspective to the main argument and show a deep competence and familiarity
with the writer’s topic. It shows that you are not just accepting the writer’s claim
but examining different perspective.

EXAMPLES:

Claim: The thought of animals being harmed by their trainers is reckless.

Counterclaim: Critics argue that elephants are happy in captivity.

Claim: Some people hunt for food and need more time to get more food.
Counterclaim: In disagreement, many hunters only hunt for trophy and
waste the meat

WRITING A COUNTERCLAIM
Everyone has different perspectives in a single argument. As varied point of views
are presented, one may stand firmly for a belief and surely, someone will counter
it with either a stronger or a weaker argument.

Steps in writing a counterclaim:

1. When you introduce the counterclaim, talk about why people believe it. Start
off introducing the counterclaim with phrases such as:

The opposing view is that…

Some people think…
Some say that…
Others may believe..

2. Do not introduce your counterclaim in the introductory paragraph.

3. After you introduce the counterclaim, you then have to discuss why the
counterclaim is incorrect.
4. You can start of the rebuttal in a number of ways such as:
Despite this information…
Nevertheless…
However…
