Question: What is Resistor, Capacitor, Inductor? Classify its types with

diagram and symbol representation.

Answer:
1. Resistor
A resistor is an electronic component that resists the flow of electric current,
dissipating energy as heat. It's used to control current flow, adjust signal levels,
divide voltages, and more.
• Symbol: The resistor symbol varies slightly by region, but the two main
types are:
o Zigzag line (used in the U.S.)
o Rectangle (used in Europe)
Types of Resistors
1. Fixed Resistor
o Has a constant resistance value.
o Examples: Carbon Composition, Metal Film, Wire-wound Resistors.
2. Variable Resistor
o Resistance can be adjusted.
o Examples: Potentiometer, Rheostat.
3. Special Resistors
o Have specific characteristics.
o Examples: Thermistor (temperature-dependent), LDR (light-
dependent resistor).
2. Capacitor
A capacitor is a component that stores electrical energy temporarily and
releases it when needed. It’s used for filtering, energy storage, and signal
coupling applications.
• Symbol:
o Two parallel lines with a gap in between.
o One curved line and one straight line (for polarized capacitors).
Types of Capacitors
1. Fixed Capacitors
o Have a fixed capacitance value.
o Examples: Ceramic, Electrolytic, Tantalum Capacitors.
2. Variable Capacitors
o Capacitance can be adjusted.
o Examples: Trimmer Capacitors, Tuning Capacitors.
3. Special Capacitors
o Have specific characteristics.
o Examples: Supercapacitors, Film Capacitors.

3. Inductor
An inductor is a coil of wire that generates a magnetic field when current flows
through it. It’s used for filtering, energy storage, and inductance applications.
• Symbol:
o A series of loops or a coiled wire.
Types of Inductors
1. Air Core Inductor
o Has no magnetic core, just air in between.
2. Iron Core Inductor
o Has an iron core, which increases inductance.
3. Ferrite Core Inductor
o Has a ferrite core, commonly used in high-frequency applications.
4. Variable Inductor
o Inductance can be adjusted.

Question: Classify the types of Active Elements with Diagrams.

Answer:
Active elements in electronics are components that can amplify power or
energy, supplying energy to a circuit. The main types of active elements include
transistors, diodes, vacuum tubes, and integrated circuits (ICs). Each of these
elements has its own types, functionalities, symbols, and applications.
1. Transistor
Transistors are semiconductor devices used for switching and amplification.
They have three terminals: the emitter, base, and collector, and they control
the flow of current or voltage between the collector and emitter.
Types of Transistors
1. Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT)
o Types: NPN and PNP transistors.

o Used in amplification and switching applications.

2. Field Effect Transistor (FET)
o Types: JFET (Junction FET) and MOSFET (Metal-Oxide-
Semiconductor FET).

o Used for high input impedance applications.

3. Diagram & Symbols

2. Diode
Diodes are semiconductor devices that allow current to flow in one direction
only. They have two terminals: anode and cathode.
Types of Diodes
1. Standard Diode
o Used in rectification and protection circuits.
o Symbol:
2. Light Emitting Diode (LED)
o Emits light when current flows through it.
o Symbol:

3. Zener Diode
o Allows current to flow in the reverse direction when a specific
breakdown voltage is reached.
o Symbol:

3. Vacuum Tube
Vacuum tubes are older active devices used in amplification, switching, and
signal modulation. They have been mostly replaced by transistors but are still
used in some high-frequency and high-power applications.
Types of Vacuum Tubes
1. Triode
o Has three electrodes: anode, cathode, and grid.
o Used for signal amplification.

2. Tetrode
o Has four electrodes: anode, cathode, grid, and screen grid.
o Used in radio frequency amplification.

3. Pentode
o Has five electrodes, including an additional suppressor grid.
o Used in audio amplification.

4. Integrated Circuit (IC)

Integrated circuits are complex circuits embedded on a single chip, containing
transistors, diodes, resistors, and capacitors. They’re used in various electronic
devices and can perform analog or digital functions.
Types of Integrated Circuits
1. Analog IC
o Performs continuous signal processing.
o Example: Operational Amplifier (Op-Amp).
o Symbol:
2. Digital IC
o Used for digital logic operations.
o Example: Logic gates (AND, OR, NOT).
o Symbol for AND Gate:
