Current Electricity Revision 24
Current Electricity Revision 24
1. The diagram shows two switches connected to two light bulbs and a 12V battery.
Currently switch A is up and switch B is down.
a) Will the light bulbs light in this way? Explain. (2) X Y

c) How are the 2 bulbs connected in series or in parallel? (1)
e) The table gives information about three sets of bulbs A, B, and C. In each case, say
whether the bulbs are in series or in parallel. Then complete the last column. (3)

2. The hair drier shown has a heating element of rating 900W, 240V.
b) Calculate the cost of running the drier for 30 minutes if 1KwHr costs 17c. (4)
c) A hair drier usually has a plastic casing. Explain how this makes the drier safer. (1)
d) The drier is connected in series to a bulb of resistance 5 Ohms. Calculate the total
resistance.
e) If the bulb and drier are connected in parallel. What is the effective resistance?
L. Attard 2
3. The circuit shows a wire AB 2m long. It is connected with a 2V battery and a resistor of
resistance of 2 Ohms.
A B
a) The ammeter reads 0.4A. Calculate the resistance of wire AB. (3)
ii) a wire of the same thickness which is only 1m long. Explain. (2)
iii) a wire of same thickness and length but of a different metal. Explain. (1)
L. Attard 3
d) Rita thinks that the square of the diameter of the thickness of the wire is directly
proportional to the Resistance of the wire.
John thinks that the square of the diameter of the thickness of the wire is inversely
proportional to the Resistance of the wire.
You are provided with 4 different insulated wires of increasing and known thickness and
same length; and a power supply.
i) What additional apparatus do you require to be able to do an
experiment to verify who is correct. (2)
iii) Write down 1 precaution one must make in doing such an experiment. (1)
