Method Statement for Painting Works

1. Scope of Work

This method statement covers the preparation, application, and quality control for painting works on
internal and external surfaces. It ensures that the painting is carried out efficiently, safely, and in
compliance with project specifications and standards.

2. Responsibilities

 Site Engineer: Oversees painting works and ensures adherence to specifications.

 HSE Officer: Ensures all safety protocols are followed.

 Foreman: Manages the painting team and equipment.

 Quality Control Team: Conducts inspections and verifies the quality of work.

3. Materials

 Primer: Approved type suitable for the surface (e.g., acrylic, alkyd).

 Paint: As per approved specification (e.g., water-based, oil-based, or textured).

 Thinners: Compatible with the paint system.

 Fillers and Putties: Approved materials for surface preparation.

4. Equipment

 Brushes, rollers, and spray guns.

 Sandpaper, scrapers, and putty knives.

 Ladders, scaffolding, or mobile platforms.

 Cleaning tools (cloths, water buckets, etc.).

5. Procedure

5.1 Pre-painting Preparations

1. Review and approve paint samples and specifications.

2. Ensure the surface is ready for painting, with no cracks, moisture, or other defects.

3. Conduct a site inspection to verify conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.) are suitable for
painting.

5.2 Surface Preparation

1. For new concrete/plastered walls:

o Allow adequate curing time for concrete/plaster (typically 28 days for concrete).

o Clean the surface to remove dust, grease, or contaminants.

o Apply filler to cracks and imperfections and sand smooth.

2. For existing painted surfaces:

o Remove loose or peeling paint.

o Sand the surface to ensure proper adhesion.

o Clean the surface to remove dirt and debris.

3. For metal surfaces:

o Remove rust and scale using a wire brush or sandpaper.

o Apply a rust-inhibitive primer before painting.

5.3 Primer Application

1. Apply an approved primer to the prepared surface using a brush, roller, or spray gun.

2. Allow the primer to dry as per manufacturer’s instructions before applying subsequent coats.

5.4 Paint Application

1. Apply the first coat of paint uniformly using the appropriate tool.

2. Allow the first coat to dry completely.

3. Sand lightly between coats to ensure a smooth finish.

4. Apply subsequent coats until the desired finish and coverage are achieved.

5. Maintain even coverage and avoid visible brush or roller marks.

5.5 Final Inspection and Touch-ups

1. Inspect the painted surfaces for uniformity, color consistency, and quality.

2. Touch up areas with uneven coverage, drips, or other defects.

6. Quality Control

1. Conduct visual inspections at each stage (primer, first coat, final coat).

2. Check adhesion and uniformity of the paint.

3. Verify that the paint color matches approved samples.

4. Test surface hardness and resistance if specified.

7. Health and Safety

1. Ensure all workers wear PPE (e.g., gloves, goggles, masks).

2. Provide proper ventilation in enclosed spaces.

3. Mark and cordon off the work area to prevent unauthorized access.

4. Store paints and thinners in designated areas away from open flames.

5. Provide fire extinguishers and first-aid kits on-site.

8. Environmental Considerations

1. Dispose of paint cans and thinners according to local regulations.

2. Minimize waste by mixing only the required quantity of paint.

3. Avoid paint spills and clean up immediately if they occur.

9. References

 Project Specifications

 Relevant Standards (e.g., BS EN 13300, ISO 12944 for coatings)

 Manufacturer’s instructions for paint and primer.

10. Attachments

1. Paint sample approvals.

2. Inspection checklists.

3. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for paints and thinners.

This method statement ensures a systematic approach to painting works and compliance with safety
and quality requirements.
