STUDY UNIT 5: JOSHUA-
CROSSING INTO THE JORDAN

a. The book of Joshua is a “good news”

book, optimistic and upbeat. The
contrast in general content of the book
of Joshua is that the Israelites now
generally obey and do what God tells
them to do, when in the past books they
were disobedient. The story running
from Exodus to Joshua is the story of
God delivering the Israelites. The book
of Joshua is an exciting and dramatic
conclusion to a long painful journey. The
proceeding books will tell us about life
after the Israelites have settled into the
promised land.
(OTES112 SU05.1) b) Joshua Crossing
the Jordan - video

Yes

b. The heart of this book is the

proclamation that God is faithful to
his promises. The first main theme is
the promise of “rest”. This theme
focuses on the rest and relief of the
Israelites after wandering for years
waging war constantly now they will
be able to settle down on their own
farms and raise their families
peacefully. The second theme is that
ultimately inclusion into the people
of God is based on trust and faith in
God, and not in Hebrew ethnicity.
This is an example of how God works
behind the scenes to fulfil the
Abraham covenant. Final theme is a
reminder that the Israelites are not
quite successful in driving out
Canaanites something that will come
to hurt them later.

c. The promised land

No

d. Being called ‘a servant of the Lord’ is

one of the highest titles bestowed in
the Scriptures. Joshua had to go
through the most to make sure that
he delivers God’s people into the
Promised Land. And by doing all that
he is proving himself to God, which
he successfully did. God gave him the
title at the end because Joshua was a
example of a person who is a strong
believer with faith and who
wholeheartedly follows God. And
God gave or announced rather this
title because he is deserving of it.

No

e. So according to the Barker Bible Book

the purpose of the circumcision is
based on how the people that came
out of Egypt and died in the
wilderness had been circumcised, but
all the ones born in the wilderness
during the journey from Egypt had
not. And this shows they had not
been practicing or continuing the
practice of circumcision, perhaps
signifying a rapture in their covenant
relationship with God. So those who
were of military age died in the
wilderness since they didn’t obey
God and by doing this God had sworn
that they will not see the Promised
Land and so he raised up their sons in
their place, and these were the ones
Joshua circumcised after crossing the
Jordan, thus recommitting to the
covenant. Then we see that next they
celebrated the Passover in the
Promised Land and we learn that the
Passover purpose is to commentate
the liberation of the Israelites who
were led out of Egypt by Moses and
this Passover is a “passing over” of
forces of destruction. It’s about
strength, hope, and triumph.

f. They were a group of aggressive
seafarers. They are held responsible
for the destruction of old powers.
And in the days of Joshua they
wanted to take over the lands
especially when the Israelites had
turned their backs on God and his
covenant.

No
g. The Lord told the priests to take the
ark and walk around the city for
seven days and on the seventh day
they had to blow the horns which
made the walls of Jericho tumble
down and that’s how they conquered
the city. And most importantly they
were faithful in God’s word which
made them have faith in God.

the Lord, and all this became a
spiral.
(OTES112 SU5.2) Judges – video

c. Deborah is one of the few judges

who does not seem to have
some kind of character flaw, and
the book of Judges she emerges
as a true hero. Barak was a timid
and afraid man in contrast to
Deborah. All in all Deborah is a
brave woman and Barak hid
behind Deborah
(OTES112 SU05.2) Judges – video

d. The Israelites worshipped Baals

and the Ashtoreths, and the gods
of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the
gods of Moab, the gods of
Ammonites and the gods of the
Philistines.

e. A Nazirite is someone that takes

f. That he will sacrifice whoever or
whatever comes out of his house
to greet him when he returns
from war and only if God gives
him victory.
( OTES112 SU05.2) Judges –
video

Yes

g. We learn that his story

symbolically represents the
parallel story of Israel itself.
Called to be separate unto God,
both Samson and Israel ignore
God’s commandment that set
them apart. And this is a spiral
that they will always do wrong
and run back to God to ask for
forgiveness and after a few while
go back to breaking their
covenant with God again.
Samson’s life is illustrative of
Israel life in that period in a very
much similar ways. Like Samson,
was loaded with tremendous
potential, due to God’s
empowering Presence. Yet, like
Samson, the Israelites squander
that potential, spit in the face of
God, and find themselves
enslaved by foreigners.
(OTES112 SU05.2) Judges – video

Yes
h. Israel broke their covenant with
God when they decided to sin
and not respect God and his
commandments anymore. God
wants his people to holy and
faithful to him and him alone.
But the Israelites started to
embrace the idolatry and
degenerate behaviour of the
Canaanites. God only wanted his
people to live a good life as he
promised them and their
forefathers without a doubt. God
warned them that if they
abandon him and turn to idols,
embracing the corrupt behaviour
associated with idolatry, then he
will punish and expel them from
the land. And we know that God
knows our future and he knew
this would happen but for the
fact that he warned them to
prevent it from happening the
Israelites did not heed the
warning and did what they
wanted. The Israelites where
given many opportunities to
prove their selves worthy to God
despite them disobeying him all
the time. And as much as they
did that and God forgave them
each time they became worse
and worse together with the
judges God sent to deliver the
Israelites. And as we learned not
only have the Israelites failed to
drive out the Canaanites out of
their land, but they are quickly
becoming just like the
Canaanites themselves, serving
Canaanites gods and embracing
Canaanites morality, which all
this God warned them about.

d. Because the Ark was lost and

without the Presence of God
there was no point for the
Israelites to live in the land as
there won’t be or have any
power remaining there. We
learned in the ancient world,
often the connection was made
between a nation’s victory and
the power of its gods. So when
Philistia defeated Israel some
suspected that Dagon, the god of
Philistines, had also defeated the
Lord, the Lord of Israel. The
Philistines took the captured ark
to the city of Ashdod and placed
it as a captured trophy before
the statue of their god Dagon.
When they returned in the
morning Dagon has fallen on his
face. They picked up the fallen
pieces of the idol and propped
him back up, same thing
happens the following day but
this time his head and hands had
been cut off. We again learned in
the ancient world, the victorious
king would often cut off their
hand or head of the defeated
king. So the Lord was making a
clear statement about who won
the battle and who is the true
God.

e. Because now Samuel was old
and has judged and led them
peacefully now the people see
that since his old and his sons
are corrupt and unjust, they
don’t want them as their judges
that demand a new king. So
Samuel’s rejection to the
monarchy he pointed out that
the establishment of a monarchy
will bring centralized
government and lots of taxes, as
well as forced service in the army
and at court.

g. 1. “ The king must not

acquire great numbers of
horses for himself, or make
the people return to Egypt to
get more of them.”
2. “ He must not take many
wives, or his heart will be led

to revere the Lord his God
and follow carefully all the
words of this law and these

Israelites and turn from the
Law to the right or to the
left”.
We learn that ironically 1
Kings 10:14-29 brags about
Solomon’s kingdom by
stressing how much silver
and gold he had, as well as
how many chariots and
chariot horses he had, two of
the things prohibited in
Deuteronomy 17.

deliverance, indeed
life itself, are available
through the worship of
God.
