Exp 3: STUDY OF CHARACTERISTICS OF SCR

Using Power Electronics Training Device

1. Aim
To plot the I-V characteristics of SCR

2. Objectives
1. To know the effect of gate current on the collector to the emitter of
SCR(Thyristor)

2. To be able to make an analysis on the V-I characteristics of SCR

3. To be able to know Latching and Holding current of SCR

3. Circuit diagram of SCR for V-I Characteristics:
4. Graph of SCR for V-I Characteristics:
5.PROCEDURE:
A. Forward Blocking State / OFF state
1) Connect the circuit as shown in the figure.
2) Keep SCR gate open.
3) Vary the voltage between anode & cathode by
changing supply V2.
4) To find the leakage current, keep gate open and
increase voltage V2 to firing
value. A small magnitude of current will flow through
the device which is called
leakage current. (IL).
5.PROCEDURE:
B. Forward Conducting State / ON State
6) Connect the gate of the SCR to supply V1.

7) Adjust gate current by changing V1 and find out the

firing voltage of SCR.

8) Switch off the V1 supply. Increase V2 slowly, note down

IA. Now reduce the voltage between anode & cathode
by changing V2. Note down the holding current
(IH) at which SCR turns off.
5.PROCEDURE:
C.V-I CHARACTERISTICS:
1. Make all connections as per the circuit diagram.
2. Initially keep V1& V2 at minimum position and R1& R2
maximum position.

3. Adjust Gate current Ig to some constant by varying the V1 or

R1.
4. Now slowly vary V2 and observe Anode to Cathode voltage
VAK and Anode current IA.

5. Tabulate the readings of Anode to Cathode voltage VAK and

Anode current IA

6. Repeat the above procedure for different Gate current Ig.

5.PROCEDURE:
D.GATE TRIGGRING AND FINDING VG AND IG:-

1. Keep all positions at minimum.

2. Set Anode to Cathode voltage VAK to some volts say

15V.

3. Now slowly vary the V1 voltage till the SCR triggers and
note down the reading of gate current(IG) and Gate
Cathode voltage(VGK) and rise of anode current IA.

4. Repeat the same for different Anode to Cathode

voltage and find VAK and IG values.
6. Results and analysis:
Latching Current = ____ mA
Holding Current = ______ mA.
