The Synchronous Motor from a Magnetic Field Perspective The Synchronous Motor Torque-Speed Characteristic Curve
The speed of the synchronous motor will be constant regardless o/the load. This fixed rate of rotation is given
where nm is the mechanical rate of rotation, fse is the stator electrical
frequency, and P is the number of poles in the motor. So, these motors are normally used for such application where high loads are operating. • As the output of the motor is mechanical so a rating of motor will be in HP rather than in KWs. In given figure shows the rating of a large motor. Synchronous Motor Disadvantages • Synchronous motor is not self-excited it needs special dc source for this process. • It also not self-start need special arrangements for self-starting. • Its price of per kilowatt-hour is larger than an induction motor. • Due to presence of a slip ring and carbon brushes its price is higher.
