The paragraph illustrates the statistic of distances travelled by people in the UK using different
means of transport in 1990 and 2000.
Overall, the total kilometers travelled by all transport combined increased apart from bicycle and bike. The figures for bus and rail were significantly higher in both years compared to bicycles, motorbikes, and air travel. In 1990, the proportion of distance travelled by bus was highest, at around 40 billion kilometres, followed by rail with a slightly lower figure. By the year 2000, the distances covered by both bus and rail increased to the same level, each with approximately 45 billion kilometers. The figure for kilometres travelled by bicycles, motorbikes and air transport, was incredibly low in 1990, with motorbikes covering the most kilometers of the three transports at around 10 billion passenger kilometers. In 2000, the figure for air travel rose to about 10 billion kilometers, in contrast to the decline seen in the other two modes. Finally, the total passenger kilometres increased from 100 billion to 112.5 billion kilometers in 2000.
