2. Please explain your approach including specific instructional skills and strategies for
teaching students with special needs in;
a) Mainstream classes
Teaching students with special needs in mainstream classes requires a thoughtful and
inclusive approach that addresses individual learning needs while fostering an
inclusive classroom environment. Here's a structured approach, including specific
instructional skills and strategies:
i. Understanding individual needs: I will Conduct thorough assessments to
understand each student's strengths, weaknesses, and learning preferences. I
will offer different instructional strategies to cater for diverse learning styles. I
will allow for varied ways of demonstrating knowledge like oral presentations,
projects or even written assignment.
ii. Creating an inclusive environment: I will arrange the physical class
environment to support accessibility and ease of movement. I will use positive
reinforcement and behavior management strategies to promote engagement
and reduce disruptive behaviors. Also, I will encourage peer interactions and
cooperative learning activities.
iii. Communication and collaboration: I will maintain open communication with
parents or guardians regarding progress, challenges and strategies. I will also
work closely with special education teachers and occupational therapists to
ensure smooth learning process.
b) Self-contained special education class.
Teaching students with special needs in a self-contained special education class
requires a highly specialized and individualized approach. Here's a structured
approaches that I will use;
i. Instructional skills and strategies: I will break down skills and concepts into
small, manageable steps with explicit teaching of each step. I will also use
visual aids such as visual schedules, graphic organizers and pictures to
enhance understanding and communication. I will provide access to assistive
technology devises and tools that facilitate independence and management.
ii. Communication and collaboration: I will work closely with paraprofessionals,
therapists and support staff to coordinate services and interventions. I will
involve families in goal setting and planning for transitions and future goals
iii. Continuous professional development: I will engage in ongoing learning
through workshops, conferences and peer collaboration. I will reflect on
teaching practices and student outcomes to continually refine instructional
approaches.
c) Resource class setting.
Teaching students with special needs in a resource class setting involves providing
targeted support and interventions to help them achieve their educational goals while
promoting inclusion within the general education curriculum. This is how I will
achieve this;
i. Understanding individual needs: I will use assessment data to inform
instructional planning and monitor progress towards goals. I will involve
parents in goal setting and progress monitoring of the learner’s progress and
maintain regular communication.
ii. Multi-sensory approaches: I will incorporate manipulatives, interactive
materials and sensory experiences to enhance learning. I will reduce support as
students demonstrate understanding and independence. I will use educational
apps and software that provide additional support and accessibility features.
iii. Behavior and social skill support: I will teach and reinforce social skills
through explicit instruction, role-playing and peer modeling. I will encourage
peer learning and mentoring to build relations and support academic growth.
Also, I will pair students with peers for collaborative learning activities and
social interactions.
3. How can a 21st century teacher effectively use technology to effectively assess learners
innovatively and give feedback in real-time?

Effectively using technology for assessment and providing real-time feedback in the 21st
century classroom can enhance student engagement, personalize learning experiences, and
promote continuous improvement. The following are some of the strategies a teacher can use
to achieve this;
a. Assessment strategies:
i. By use of interactive whiteboard or smart boards for real-time quizzes,
brainstorming sessions and collaborative activities
ii. By use of tools like seesaw, google classrooms or OneNote to create digital
portfolios where students can upload their work, reflect on their learning and
receive ongoing feedback
iii. By use of apps and tools like Socrative or Nearpod to collect real-time data on
student understanding during lessons through quizzes, polls, and open-ended
questions.
b. Providing real-time feedback. This can be achieved through;
i. Immediate feedback tools: Use of tools like Flipgrid to record audio or video
feedback, which can be more personalized and engaging for students.
ii. Collaborative editing and annotation: Use of Google Docs or Microsoft Word
allow teachers to provide real-time comments and suggestions directly within
student documents, fostering revision and improvement.
iii. Data analytic and learning management system: By utilization of features
within the Data analytic and learning management system platforms such as
Moodle, Canva or Schoology to track student progress, analyse assessment
data, and provide targeted feedback based on individual performance.
c. Innovative approaches: This can be achieved through the following;
i. Student response system: Tools like Plickers or Mentimeter enable teachers to
gather real-time responses from students using mobile devices or printed
cards, providing instant feedback on understanding.
ii. Gamification and interactive simulations: Use educational games or
simulations (e.g simulations for science experiments, historical events) to
assess understanding in a dynamic and engaging way.
iii. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR): Explore AR and VR
applications that allow students to interact with virtual environments or
models, providing opportunities for immersive learning experiences and
assessment.
d. Best practices: This is achieved through the following;
i. Aligning assessments and feedback with clear learning objectives to ensure
they serve educational goals.
ii. Ensuring feedback is timely, specific, and constructive to support student
learning and growth.
iii. Encouraging students to reflect on feedback and use it to improve their
understanding and skills.
iv. Ensuring that technological tools and platforms used for assessment and
feedback are accessible to all students, including those with diverse needs.
