Disconnect to Reconnect: Banning Phones for a Better School Experience

Januel Pastorfide

In today’s digital age, smartphones have become integral to student’s

daily lives, providing instant access to information and communication.
However, this convenience comes with significant drawbacks, particularly in
school environment. The pervasive use of smartphones in classrooms has
been linked to distractions, decreased academic performance, and a decline
in face-to-face interactions. This paper argues that banning phones in schools
is essential to foster a focused learning atmosphere, promote student
engagement, and enhance social skills.

Ultimately, implementing a ban on smartphones in educational settings

will create a more conductive learning environment, improve academic
performance, and encourage healthier social interactions among students.

Cellphones is a huge distractions in school especially during classes,

students find it difficult to concentrate and listen to the teacher’s discussion
while using cellphones, Students will focus and learn much more knowledge if
they don’t have access in cellphones during classes, if they do this on a daily
basis it may affect their academic performance.

According to Senator Gatchalian’s argument “First, it affects

performance directly as a greater use of a phone while studying is correlated
with a greater negative impact on grades or scores. Second, it affects
performance indirectly because the learner’s skills and cognitive abilities
needed for academic success are also negatively affected by excessive
phone use” Gatchalian stated. The argument obviously shows and tells us
that it is a big disadvantage when it comes to students having access to their
mobile phones during classes not only that it will distract them but it will also
affect their academic performance and the learner’s skills and cognitive
abilities at the same time.

A study shows that the detrimental effect on learning increases with the
amount of time spent on a phone study sessions. Overuse of phones has a
detrimental impact on students cognitive and skill sets, which are essential for
academic achievement. (OJ Sunday sciencedirect.com 2022). Meaning to say
that with the continuous access of mobile phones during lessons or classes
may affect the students thinking skills that the students need in order to catch
up or understand a particular lesson.

With the excessive use of mobile phone it can also affect the students
when it comes to their mental health, mobile phones should only be used in a
limited time three to four hours a day is enough, with the overuse of
Cellphones it is possible that the user may encounter mental health problem,
according to a study conducted by Therapy Brands millions of smartphone
users world wide suffer from smartphone addiction, a severe mental health
condition, smartphone addiction can have serious consequences, including
increased stress, worry, and depression as well as decreased sleep quality. It
can also negatively affect performance at work or school, overuse of
smartphone might result in poorer performance at work or in the classroom.
Someone’s times should be spent on work or school-related activities when
they continuously checking their phone for notifications or using social media.
this might result in worse work performance, lower academic grades, and
elevated stress levels (Therapy Brands.com 2023).

A disturbing result of students bringing cellphones result is that

students may use their cellphones to post inappropriate content or send
harmful messages, which can lead to cyberbullying. With increased access to
technology cyberbullying is a very real challenge facing many students and
families (2023 reachout.com). In a survey conducted in the Philippines, it was
found that 80% of the 1,143 respondents aged 13-16 years experienced
cyberbullying. A psychological factor related to the development of violent
behavior is having low empathy level (National Library of Medicine.com).

Banning phones in schools can lead to a more focused and distraction

free learning environment. It encourages face-to-face interaction and
enhances student engagement in classroom activities. However, it’s essential
to consider the benefits of technology in education and find a balance that
allows foe responsible use while minimizing distractions. Overall, a thoughtful
approach to phone policies can support both academic success and student
well-being.
