Strategies for Developing Critical and Creative Thinking as well
as Higher-Order Thinking Skills
Fostering critical and creative thinking and higher-order cognitive
skills in an educational environment necessitates a purposeful strategy. In this way, educators facilitate opportunities for students to examine, evaluate, and synthesize knowledge, enabling them to engage in deeper cognitive processing of the material. I noticed several teaching techniques during my observation, such as open-ended inquiries, collaborative conversations, and analytical activities, that prompted students to go further into a subject. I realized that involving students in these activities deepens their comprehension and fosters independent thinking. I also learned that these techniques are important to create students' awareness of the importance of thinking critically and out of the box.
The rate at which students build their concept knowledge and
understanding affects their learning progress, especially when the teacher has to spend much time guiding them on using known principles to solve a given task. Regarding this, containing activities for honing critical thinking and innovative thinking skills is an efficient solution. These strategies enhance understanding to the next level and enable the students to deal with content in a more enhanced way. Educators who used higher-order thinking skills taught the students to consider and search independently for an answer and all related aspects from various approaches. Furthermore, I believe that letting the students find their own solutions creatively will again greatly benefit solving problems. In this way, we can help them instill a growth mindset, prepare them for future failure, and move forward to find success.
I have also learned that these activities would allow students to go
beyond basic knowledge and can greatly enhance their learning experience. In a classroom setting, my cooperating teacher encouraged students to explain their learning and understanding by reflecting on their reasoning and approach. Through this, she can easily identify areas needing further improvement and apply those strategies to those specific learners' needs. I feel that students are also eager to learn and develop their critical and creative skills in a way that they make a difference. Thus, I also understand that teachers should create a more collaborative work environment by asking the students to share their opinions when thinking aloud in the classroom. I also think that this way, we can shape the critical and creative thinking necessary to develop students’ conceptual understanding of complex situations.
When I become a teacher, I will stress my students' development of
higher-order thinking abilities in the future by incorporating challenging and interactive activities. I will also include individual and group projects that encourage students to work together, communicate, and use various methods to solve problems. I will also give students an opportunity to share their ideas and thoughts, which will help them evaluate and understand what they have learned. By this, I will make the classroom a place where critical and creative thought is valued, where I hope to help students develop the skills they need to do well in school and their personal lives.
