CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

Making soap from recycled cooking oil is one of the good efforts to deal with the problem of
pollution that is becoming more widespread. Recycle cooking oil is usually simply thrown
away in the sink or drain. Soap made from recycled cooking oil provides good added value
by producing a product that can be used in everyday life.

In soap making, a chemical reaction called saponification occurs when oil or fat reacts with
alkali, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), to produce soap. Recycled cooking oil contains
triglycerides, which are the basic ingredients in this process. In addition, soap products from
recycled cooking oil can be developed into an environmentally friendly product with the use
of neutral materials and can be commercialised among traders, cleaning workers, housewives,
and the whole community.

1.2 Objective

For this product Green Cleaner, there are several objectives that we have identified and
discussed.

i. Creating soap from recycled cooking oil with neutral ingredients.

ii. To manufacture affordable, high-quality soap without negatively affecting customers.

iii. To reduce environmental pollution by repurposing recycle cooking oil, preventing it

from being improperly disposed of into drains.

1
1.3 Scope of Project

In this study, several scopes and limitations of the project have been identified namely:

i. This project uses recycled cooking oil as the main raw material, sodium hydroxide
and water, without using additional chemicals such as dyes and preservatives.

ii. This project aims to educate and promote awareness about the practice of oil
recycling for soap making in communities such as businesses, educational institutions
and so on.

iii. The soap produced is intended for general use, such as personal hygiene and cleaning
purposes such as washing the floor.

CHAPTER 2
PROBLEM ANALYSIS AND STATEMENT

2.1 Definition of Problem

Problems are common things that happen in everyday life, whether in learning matters, work
matters, or various other matters. Problems also refer to the process of identifying, describing,
and explaining a situation or situation that needs a solution. It is an important initial step in
the process of solving a problem, making a decision, or conducting research.

2.2 Problem Statement

The problem statement for green cleaner is as follows:

i. Avoiding water pollution from cooking oil waste into sinks and drains that cause
damage to the water ecosystem.

ii. Avoid wasting recycled cooking oil by utilising it to produce quality products.

iii. Increase community awareness to manage recycled cooking oil in a responsible and
environmentally friendly way.

2.3 Problem Analysis

The use of recycled cooking oil to produce soap is a good initiative to reduce waste and
protect the environment. However, there are several problems that need to be overcome,
including a lack of awareness among the community in managing recycled cooking oil. They
do not realise the potential of recycled cooking oil as a material that can be reused to produce
soap. In addition, problems such as no organised collection system for recycled cooking oil
cause much of this waste oil to be dumped uncontrollably into drainage and the environment.
This causes water pollution that is becoming more widespread. The following is the
percentage of water quality in Malaysia from 2008 to 2018 from the Department of
Environment.

2.4 Summary

In conclusion, the problems that have been studied have proven that the products produced
are suitable for dealing with water pollution problems. Soap products from recycled cooking
oil cannot completely solve the problem, but they can help reduce water pollution and raise
awareness for the community.

CHAPTER 3

GENERATE IDEAS

3.1 Product Description

Green Cleaner is an innovative product made from recycled cooking oil that is transformed
into eco-friendly soap. This product aims to reduce the waste of recycled cooking oil, which
is often thrown away irresponsibly and contributes to environmental pollution. This product
supports sustainability efforts and recycling practices. This soap is also produced from
recycled cooking oil mixed with safe chemicals such as sodium hydroxide to produce soap
that works as a cleaning agent. This soap is suitable for various uses, such as washing the
floor, washing hands, and general cleaning. In addition, additional ingredients such as natural
dyes from roses, telang flowers, and pandan leaves, as well as essential oil, can be added to
improve the quality of the product. The production of this soap utilises used cooking oil
collected from households, restaurants, or collection centers. This effort not only helps to
reduce the disposal of waste oil into the drain. This product is designed to provide consumers
with a high-quality option compared to products on the market while also contributing to
environmental care by encouraging the reuse of waste materials.

3.2 Product Features

This product is designed in a simple size and easy to hold, suitable for personal, household,
institutional, or commercial needs. The design of this produced soap is easy to use and take
anywhere, such as on vacation, to school, university, and many other places. In addition, this
soap is enriched with additional ingredients such as organic fragrances from pandan leaves
and safe dyes from several types of flowers, such as telang flowers, making this soap safe for
use by all walks of life. The speciality of this soap is that it is produced without using harmful
chemicals and is based on recycled resources. The manufacturing process utilises recycled
cooking oil, which often pollutes drainage systems if disposed of irresponsibly. Therefore,
this soap is environmentally friendly, which contributes to efforts to protect the environment.
This product is also sold at an affordable price and is believed to be able to meet the
needs of

consumers while educating the public about the importance of recycling and environmental
protection.

3.3 Competitor Product

To produce recycled cooking oil soap, we have consulted several eco-friendly soap products
that are available but are not commercially marketed in the market that use recycled oil as the
main ingredient. One of the products analysed is soap from Mummy Lin Shop, which has
been designed by the product manufacturer. Products from this manufacturer are studied to
understand their advantages and disadvantages, which is the basis for improving the formula
and design of the products we want to develop. Soap from Mummy Lin Shop is produced
using recycled cooking oil as the main ingredient through a clean and environmentally
friendly saponification process. However, this product still has some shortcomings, such as
not having any scent like lavender and not having additional colouring from neutral
ingredients. In addition, it has unattractive and less prominent packaging. Based on these
weaknesses, we suggest some improvements to produce a soap of better quality.

3.4 Product Dissection

Product dissection is the process of analysing the materials used by a product. This step is
very important in redesigning or creating a new product. This process helps to understand
how each of the product's ingredients work and how they can be optimised to increase the
effectiveness of the product. In this section, the breakdown of components and the method of
making soap from recycled cooking oil will be explained.

Based on the diagram above, they are the ingredients needed to make soap from recycled
cooking oil. Recycled cooking oil is the main ingredient in producing this product. Recycled
cooking oil needs to undergo a cleaning and filtering process before use. Sodium hydroxide
plays an important role in the soap-making process through a chemical reaction known as
saponification. Sodium hydroxide reacts with fatty acids in oil to produce soap. This reaction
is the basis for the formation of soap and cannot occur without the presence of alkali, which
is sodium hydroxide. Natural dyes from roses, telang flowers, and pandan leaves are one way
to increase the attractiveness of buyers. In addition, essential oils are used to give a refreshing
smell. and natural to the soap compared to the synthetic fragrances out there that contain
chemicals. Among the essential oils that can be used are lavender, peppermint, orange, and so
on.
