1. GESTURES:-
Ans:-Dictionary meaning of Gesture is a motion of the face, body, eyes or limbs used to convey the message. In
face to face communication gestures have more importance. Gestures are used to emphasis on the ideas or
thoughts in oral communication. Gestures are used when a person does not know the local language. The dump
and deaf people are fully dependent upon the use of gestures. Gestures convey enthusiasm, attitude, and emotions
of a person. Our hate, joy, grief are shown through various bodily movement. Various common gestures in
routine communication indicate vario us meanings.
For Example:-
1) A gesture like handshake displays friendship and warmth.
2) Shrugging shoulders indicates indifference
3) Upraised hand indicates request for patience
2. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS:-
It is said that human face is the mirror of his heart. Facial expression come naturally hence it is beyond the
control of the speaker. Oral communication becomes more effective cause of facial expressions. There has to be
coordination between the facial expression and the message. Facial expression expresses joy, sorrow, smile and
smirk etc.
For Example:-
1) Raising eyebrows indicate wonder surprise.
2) Furrowed lines on forehead indicate worries, tension.
3) Laughing is indicated by widely opened teeth and spread lips.
3. POSTURES:-
All actions and positions of body organs indicate message. They way in which we stand, sit, walk out, sleep,
work, all tell more about our emotions and attitude. When sender speaks to a large audience, his posture should
be appropriate. A good posture can indicate a confident attitude.
For Example:-The speaker must avoid holding chair or the mike, this sends negative message to the audience.
When a speaker speaks, he should stand erect and it gives good impression.
.4 EYE CONTACT:-
a. Eye contact is one of the effective means of establishing rapport with the audience.
b. It shows your self-confidence.
c. It makes good or bad impression.
d. If a speaker do not maintain an eye contact with the listeners, listeners can think that speaker is ignoring
them and do not pay attention to the speaker.
e. Through eye contact the speaker gets signals whether the channel of communication is open or not and
get feedback.
State any two common gestures used in communication and its meaning.
Ans:-Following are the different common gestures used in the process of communication with their meaning.
1) Waving of hand – It has two meanings in communication. a) Used to indicate good bye and
b) Used to draw or seek somebody’s attention.
2) Pointing the index finger indicates indifference or being unconcerned.
3) Thumbs up sign indicates allegation or charge. It can also be used to rebuke somebody.
4) Nodding of head can be used to say yes or no.

Ans:- Body language is a non-verbal mode of communication. Gesture is a motion of the face, body, eyes or
limbs used to convey the message. And Postures refer to a position of human body. Various common gestures
and postures in routine communication indicate various meanings. It is very necessary to maintain appropriate
gestures and postures during oral communication. Wrong use of gestures or postures can lead to
misunderstandings.

Ans:- Posture refers to the way we stand, sit and carry ourselves. It tells how bold, confident, submissive or

professional has to cultivate and maintain elegance in his/her own sitting, standing and walking posture.
