MOD COUNTER AND ITS DESIGN

Lecture Outcome: Students will be able to Design the Mod Counter of any Mod value.

Lecture Motivation / Summary:

 In digital electronics, Counters can be constructed as synchronous, asynchronous, or a

combination of both. Counters can shorten their modulus by bypassing some states with
feedback.
 The modulus of an n-bit ring counter is n, while the modulus of an n-bit parallel or
Johnson counter is 2n. A single flip-flop is a modulo-2 counter because it can represent
the numbers 0 and 1.
 A modulus counter, also called a divide-by-n circuit, is a counter that produces a specific
output pattern or sequence of binary values.
 The number of states in a counter's count sequence, or the number of output states
before the counter returns to zero.
 The number of flip-flops used in a counter determines its maximum modulus. For
example, a counter with two flip-flops has a modulus of 4, while a counter with three
flip-flops has a modulus of 8.
 A counter that utilizes a specific number of states are called Mod-N counter. For
example, a Mod-5 counter uses five states.
