I. Def: An application letter (formal) is essentially a letter written to ask for something, request permission, or apply for
anything (scholarship, visa, job…etc), and, in most cases, you will be competing with other applicants. Your immediate
objective is to have your letter read by someone in the organization who has authority to screen job applicants; your ultimate
goal is to obtain an interview. Therefore, your letter must do three things: 1) catch your reader’s attention favorably, 2)
convince your reader that you are qualified for the position, 3) and request an interview. Try to accomplish the three objectives
in a one-page letter.
II. Format to write an Application & Sample application letters
1. Sender’s address/name : include your address & name at the top right-hand corner
2. Recipient/Receiver’s name & address: write the recipient name & address at the left-hand corner.
3. Greeting: greet your addressee properly/politely: use Dear Sir or Madam or Dear Mr or Ms…
4. The purpose of writing: introduce the purpose of writing in the beginning of your letter ( I am V+ing to V1)
5. The body: introduce/write down any necessary details, relevant information or facts.
6. Closing: end your letter respectfully: use Yours sincerely, Yours Faithfully, Yours obediently, or Best regards.
7. Signature: sign your application letter right below closing.
8. Name: write your name right below the signature.
