Planes, Trains & Automobiles - Average Rate of Change
Planes, Trains & Automobiles - Average Rate of Change
Staci is getting married in New York City this weekend! Her cousins, Arjun, Troy,
and Mayra are traveling in from out of town. Below, you can see each cousin’s
mode of transportation and path to get to the wedding:
1.) Arjun’s car trip was 130 miles and took 3.25 hours. If Arjun was traveling
at a constant speed, how fast was he traveling in miles per hour (miles ➗
hours)?
40
2.) Is it realistic to think that he drove at exactly the same speed for his entire trip? Why or why
not?
No, traffic stops plus speed limits within roads.
3.) Below is a picture and graph of Arjun’s actual trip. Explain Arjun’s trip in words:
On the graph, the curves of the graph are like a single helix. During the 2 hour and a half mark,
he dropped in speed/distance.
change∈ y
4.) The average rate of change is the slope ( ) of the line that connects two points.
change∈ x
We can look at average rate of change for the entire trip (your answer to question 1) or we can
look at average rate of change for an interval. Use the graph and show your work to complete
the chart below:
6.) Mayra drove to the Pittsburgh airport, flew to New York City, then drove to her hotel. Below
is a graph of Mayra’s trip. Use it to answer the questions below:
idk
7.) Below are the three travelers’ graphs together, write one sentence explaining what you see (in
relation to average rate of change and mode of transportation):
