Planes, Trains & Automobiles- Average Rate of Change

Staci is getting married in New York City this weekend! Her cousins, Arjun, Troy,
and Mayra are traveling in from out of town. Below, you can see each cousin’s
mode of transportation and path to get to the wedding:

Arjun Troy Mayra

1.) Arjun’s car trip was 130 miles and took 3.25 hours. If Arjun was traveling
at a constant speed, how fast was he traveling in miles per hour (miles ➗
hours)?
40

2.) Is it realistic to think that he drove at exactly the same speed for his entire trip? Why or why
not?
No, traffic stops plus speed limits within roads.
3.) Below is a picture and graph of Arjun’s actual trip. Explain Arjun’s trip in words:

On the graph, the curves of the graph are like a single helix. During the 2 hour and a half mark,
he dropped in speed/distance.

change∈ y
4.) The average rate of change is the slope ( ) of the line that connects two points.
change∈ x
We can look at average rate of change for the entire trip (your answer to question 1) or we can
look at average rate of change for an interval. Use the graph and show your work to complete
the chart below:

Interval Work Average Rate of

Change (mph)
0 to 1.5 hours Just look? 50 mph

1.5 to 2 hours Horizontall 0 mph

y straight

2 to 3.25 hours 70 mph

5.) Troy traveled by train to the wedding. Below is a graph of Troy’s trip. Use it to answer the
questions below:

a.) What was Troy’s average rate of

change for the entire trip?

b.) What was Troy’s average rate of

Change from 0 to 0.5 hours?
No major change.

c.) What was Troy’s average rate of

change from 2.25 to 3.75 hours?
40 mph

d.) In what interval did Troy move

the fastest?
2.25 to 3.75

e.) In what interval did Troy move

the slowest? 0-0.5 mph

6.) Mayra drove to the Pittsburgh airport, flew to New York City, then drove to her hotel. Below
is a graph of Mayra’s trip. Use it to answer the questions below:

a.) Select two points on the graph

then calculate the average rate of
Change (show your work)
410 mph

b.) What was Mayra’s average rate

of change for the full trip?
Idk, cant mess with graph

c.) What was Mayra’s average rate

of change during the flight?

idk
7.) Below are the three travelers’ graphs together, write one sentence explaining what you see (in
relation to average rate of change and mode of transportation):
