A card is selected at random from an ordinary pack of 52 playing cards. Consider the
1 following events: A : card is a heart, B : card is a face card, then determine (i) P(A) (ii) CO3 10
P(B), and (iii) 𝑃(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵).
Four boxes A, B, C and D contain 500, 300, 200 and 100 fuses respectively. The
percentages of fuses in the boxes which are defective are 3%, 2%, 1% and 0.5%
2 CO3 10
respectively. One fuse is selected at random arbitrarily from one of the boxes. It was
found to be a defective fuse. Determine the probability that it has come from the box D.
A random variable X has the following probability distribution:
X=x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
3 CO3 10
P (X = x) 0 k 2k 2k 3k k2 2 k2 7 k2 + k
Determine the value of (i) k, (ii) mean, and (iii) variance and standard deviation.

The probability that a pen manufactured by a company will be defective is 10. If 12 such

pens are manufactured, find the probability that (i) none will be defective, (ii) at least

two will be defective, and (iii) exactly three will be defective, and at most two are
defective.
Six coins are tossed 6400 times. Using the Poisson distribution find the approximate
5 CO3 10
probability of getting six heads 8 times.
