• Today, our spotlight shines on a topic that revolves around circles:
Segments. In this presentation, we'll dissect the intricate elements, applications, and implications of circles, exploring them segment by segment. Each segment will illuminate a different facet of circles, from their foundational properties to their diverse real-world applications. So, without further ado, let's continue the presentation. What is a Segment? • A segment of a circle can be defined as a region bounded by a chord and a corresponding arc lying between the chord's endpoints. In other words, a circular segment is a region of a circle which is created by breaking apart from the rest of the circle through a secant or a chord. Types Of Segments
There are two main types of segment
• The major segment is the segment
where the arc length is greater than half the circumference of the circle.
• The minor segment is the segment
where the arc length is less than half the circumference of the circle Properties of a Segment • It is the area that is enclosed by a chord and an arc.
• The angle subtended by the segment at
the center of the circle is the same as the angle subtended by the corresponding arc. This angle is usually known as the central angle.
• A minor segment is obtained by
removing the corresponding major segment from the total area of the circle.
• A major segment is obtained by
removing the corresponding minor segment from the total area of the circle.
• A semicircle is the largest segment in any
circle formed by the diameter and the corresponding arc. Real Life Application of a Segment This diagram shows a real life application of parts of a circle onto a physical park showing the major parts of a circle. Conclusion
• In conclusion, segments within circles offer us a framework for
understanding geometric relationships and practical applications. Their versatility and significance extend beyond mathematics into various real-world scenarios. Let's apply these insights creatively and continue exploring the depths of geometry. Fun Facts
• The perimeter of a circular segment includes the length of the
chord plus the length of the arc segment. • A circular segment is related to a circular sector but differs in that a segment is formed by a chord. • A circular sector is bounded by two radii and an arc, whereas a circular segment is bounded by a chord and an arc.
