Moderators Role for a Debate

1. Pre-Debate Responsibilities

 Understand the Topic: Be well-informed about AI and HRM concepts,

applications, and potential controversies to guide the discussion effectively.
 Clarify Rules: Brief the participants on the debate format, speaking order, time
limits, and criteria for evaluation.
 Prepare Questions: Develop neutral questions or prompts to encourage deeper
discussion or clarify arguments if needed.

2. During the Debate

Opening

 Introduce the Debate:

o Welcome participants, judges, and the audience.

o Announce the debate topic: "Is AI replacing the role of HRM, or can the
two coexist for better outcomes?"

 Present the Teams: Introduce the affirmative and negative teams, ensuring
neutrality.
 Explain the Rules: Briefly remind everyone about speaking order, time limits,
and rebuttal rounds.

Managing the Flow

 Time Management: 1 minute per speaker

o Enforce time limits for opening statements, rebuttals, and closing

arguments.
o Provide warnings for time remaining (e.g., "30 seconds left").
o Politely cut off speakers who exceed their time.

 Maintain Order:
o Prevent interruptions or inappropriate comments.
o Ensure that arguments remain respectful and focused on the topic.

Facilitating Interaction

 Encourage Rebuttals:
o Highlight opportunities for counterarguments.
o Redirect if a speaker strays off-topic.
o Example: “Can you clarify how your point counters the opposing team’s
argument on AI’s efficiency?”
 Ask Clarifying Questions (if applicable):

o Intervene with neutral questions to clarify or elaborate on complex

points.
o Example: “How do you see AI complementing HRM practices in
recruitment processes?”
 Balance Participation: Ensure both teams get equal time and opportunities to
present their arguments.

Handling Disputes

 Neutral Decision-Making: Address disputes calmly and fairly, referring to pre-

agreed rules.
 De-escalate Tensions: Step in if discussions become overly heated or personal.

3. Closing the Debate

 Summarize the Debate (Optional): Briefly recap the main points from both
sides without expressing bias.
 Invite Judges to Deliberate: (Instructor)
o Hand over to the judges for scoring and feedback.
o Announce when the decision will be shared.
 Conclude Professionally: Thank the participants, judges, and audience for their
time and effort.
