Read the case carefully and answer both questions. Shell Beach is one of the largest fishing communities on the island of San Seriffe. It has a population of 26 000 persons. The Fisheries Department reported that the residents of Shell Beach depend on fishing to ‘make a living, with the community being responsible for over 60 per cent of the fish exported by the island. Over the last three years, the Fisheries Department has noted a marked increase in the tonnes of fish caught and exported from the community. The department has employed a research agency to determine the main factors responsible for this increase. The research agency obtained a list of all the registered fisherfolk within the community and randomly selected 800 persons to participate in the study. The agency administered a survey to these individuals and obtained responses from all participants. The results showed that 240 participants believed that the increase was due to the increased use of technology by the fisherfolk in locating the most lucrative areas for fishing. Another 80 participants thought the increase was due to the presence of seaweed in the area, which provided protection for more fish to breed. Additionally, 200 participants suggested that the increase was due to the purchase of larger boats by some fisherfolk and 280 participants indicated that the increase was due to the removal of the previous limit on overfishing. ‘The findings were documented and a report was presented to the Fisheries Department. 4. @)_ State the MAIN focus of the research study.
