1. The following illustration shows a cylinder, for which its height is bounded by the graph of the
parabola p(x) = −x2 + 4 :
Calculate the radius and height of the uniquely defined cylinder with maximum volume enclosed by
the graph of p.
2. Reconstruct the equation of a third degree polynomial f , which has the following properties:
• f is an odd function
• The area enclosed by its graph and the x-Axis on [1, 2] is the same as the slope of f at x = 1
3. The fresh new startup company ,,Shroombuddies ’420 ” ordered a new and thought provoking
logo design from Fapsters & Sons:
1 4
• f (x) = − x +1
16
• g(x) = 2x8 − 2
The company is attending a convention and plans on giving away 3D printed keychains, featuring
their logo design. To do so, they first need to implement a 3D model using a CAM software by
rotating the individual areas of the curves around the y-axis.
One way to do so mathematically and to calculate the volume of a Solid of Revolution of a
function is the so-called Shell Method, which can be expressed by the following formula:
Z x0
V = 2π x · f (x) dx
0
The upper bound x0 corresponds to the positive zero of the function f , which will be rotate around
the y-axis.
b) Calculate the individual volumes of both the mushroom’s cap and the stem and show, that
64
the 3D model’s total volume amounts to Vtot = π VU !

When it comes to 3D printing, we often like to use a plastic called PLA (Polylactic Acid ), which is
usually known for warp-free printing and a good overall resistance to outer forces.
c) Calculate the density of PLA, under the assumption that a single keychain has a mass of
36.68g and one volume unit corresponds to 2.2cm3 !
d) How could one roughly estimate the total volume of the keychain without making use of
integral calculus? Try to formulate one approach to this problem and, if possible, calculate
the approximate volume (Hint: Using elementary geometrical figures could be useful)
Zusatz) How accurate is your in d) proposed approximation method? Calculate the relative
deviation!
