CHAPTER 10

TIME
I. NOTE:
• The short hand shows the hour.
• The long hand shows the minutes.
• 1 day – 24 hours
• 1 hour – 60 minutes
• 1 week – 7 days
• 1 month – 30 days
• 1 year – 12 months
• 1 year – 365 days

II. Read the given time:

The time is 10 : 15 or quarter past 10

The time is 2 o’clock


The time is 5:30 or half past 5

The time is 6:45 or quarter to 7

III. a) What will be the time after 2 hours of the following times-
i) 6 a.m. – 8 a.m.
ii) 9 p.m. – 11 p.m.
iii) 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
iv) 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
v) 3 a.m. – 5 a.m.
vi) 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.

(b) How many hours will pass in each of the following time intervals.
i) From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. – 3 hours
ii) From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. – 8 hours
iii) From 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. – 6 hours
iv) From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. – 4 hours
IV. a) Convert the given number of days into hours

i) 4 days
Since 1 day = 24 hours
So, 4 days = 4 x 24 hours
= 96 hours

ii) 13 days
Since 1 day = 24 hours
So, 13 days = 13 x 24 hours
= 312 hours

iii) 8 days
Since 1 day = 24 hours
So, 8 days = 8 x 24 hours
= 192 hours

iv) 19 days
Since 1 day = 24 hours
So, 19 days = 19 x 24 hours
= 456 hours

b) Convert the given number of hours into minutes

i) 6 hours
Since 1 hour = 60 minutes
So, 6 hours = 6 x 60 minutes
= 360 minutes
ii) 14 hours
Since 1 hour = 60 minutes
So, 14 hours = 14 x 60 minutes
= 840 minutes
iii) 9 hours
Since 1 hour = 60 minutes
So, 9 hours = 9 x 60 minutes
= 540 minutes

iv) 11 hours
Since 1 hour = 60 minutes
So, 11 hours = 11 x 60 minutes
= 660 minutes

V. Convert the following time to 24 hour clock time.

a) 10 a.m. – 10: 00
b) 1 p.m. - 1 + 12 = 13: 00
c) 9 p.m. - 9 + 12 = 21:00
d) 12 noon – 12:00
e) 6 p.m. – 6 + 12 = 18:00

VI. Convert the following time to 12 hour clock time


1) 5 : 00 – 5 a.m.
2) 16 : 15 – 4:15 p.m. (16 – 12)
3) 19 :30 – 7 :30 p.m. (19 : 30 – 12)
4) 23 :45 – 11 : 45 p.m. (23 :45 – 12)
