Course Culminating Assignment

Taking Action on an Issue

Choose a current issue in your hometown / city / Ontario / Canada and develop a thoroughly researched

Why does it matter? It matters because being homeless is not a sustainable way of life for any human

How can we help solve homelessness? I have put together a plan to help solve the homelessness issue in
East York Toronto. East York has the highest population of homeless people in Toronto, in 2021 it was estimated
that there were 3332 people homeless of those people 214 were without
shelter (Candlelight). Homelessness is a major issue that affects Toronto and it's not always their fault, some are
their fault but nobody deserves to be treated as rubbish and not accepted in society. I would like it if homeless
people were accepted by society as a normal human that deserves quality.
The major causes of homelessness in Toronto are; the crazy housing affordability in Toronto, loss of
employment, family dispute, mental illnesses, substance abuse and mental and physical abuse (Fred Victor). My
goals would be to get more homeless people out of their living state and into a healthy mental and physical
environment, to get them the best help and awareness possible. My plan to conquer this tedious goal is to help by
talking to homeless people to understand their story of how they got there and to be able to differentiate what
type of help that person is in need of to change their living situation. My plan to accomplish this goal is to show
on social media their stories so citizens can understand on a more personal level why the certain individual is in a
homeless state of life, another reason is to seek help via social media to broadcast the life of homeless to possible
people in high societal jobs that would be able to support the movement. I will do it through joining forces with
multiple organizations and communal support that already have made an established statement in helping
homeless people in East York to create a partnered solution to solve the homelessness issue in Toronto .The
obstacles that I might face are finding time for volunteer work, finding young innovative minds to help support
this cause ,having a large enough budget/donations from contributors to help with getting more qualified and
professional help.
It would help if I got much needed support from Canadian influencers especially from Toronto, public
officials, government officials, local government organizations such as;schools, hospitals and churches. Support
from classmates and local homeless organizations that can aid in;shelter accommodation , food and water
donations. One of the major organizations I can seek help from is the salvation army, which has made the
statement in helping the society of homeless people, the mayor to be able to get a person of large influence over
society to develop the need for this serious cause, ask for help from social media followers who would donate to
the thriving cause of getting homeless off the street. Taking action in this cause will start motion as soon as
possible. Especially, before winter starts because it is not safe for homeless people to be without shelter and
warmth through winter.Having homeless people without shelter during the winter months in Canada is a major
issue due to putting citizens of your province and country in a life threatening state. The steps that would be
necessary include;growing my social media platform via regular uploads and hard work with homeless people to
push the level of concern I have for homeless people.To grow my online platform to catch the eye of public
officials, influencers and to show the world these people’s lives matter the circumstance of how they ended up
there,whether it was their fault or not to seek much needed help for them. Homelessness is a serious matter that
has to be addressed on a world wide scale not only Toronto,Canada. I have made this my small goal that I hope
can start a new movement of my generation to cure this recurring circumstance and finally put a halt in this
homelessness evolution.
