Guilford County Schools Policy Regarding Automobiles on School Campuses

AUTOMOBILE SEARCHES: Students are permitted to park on school premises as a matter of privilege, not of right. As
a condition for obtaining a permit and parking a vehicle on the school premises, a student and the student’s legal
parent, legal guardian, or legal custodian must agree, in writing, to allow school officials to search any vehicle which the
student parks on school property. The school retains the authority to conduct routine patrols of the student parking lots
and inspections of the exteriors of student automobiles on school property. The interiors of student vehicles may be
inspected whenever a school authority has reasonable suspicion to believe that illegal or unauthorized materials or
other evidence of illegal activities are contained inside. Such patrols and inspections may be conducted without notice
and without further student consent. Law enforcement may also be called to search student vehicles when a law
enforcement presence would be helpful for any reason.

I understand that my son/daughter’s vehicle is subject to search.

School Polices and Rules for Student Vehicles / Behavior on Campus

1.) Parking on campus is a privilege, not a right. Students must display the numbered hang tag from their rearview
mirror at all times while parked on campus. Permits are issued on a first come, first served basis, with seniors having
priority, then Juniors, and lastly sophomores. If a student drives a different vehicle, or changes vehicles during the
school year, they must still display their student parking permit. Contact the Attendance Office if you need to
change registered vehicles during the school year.
2.) Students must have a valid driver’s license to park on campus. Parking permits will not be issued to unlicensed
drivers or students with learner’s permits.
3.) Students must park in their designated numbered parking space. No parking or driving on grass areas, sidewalks,
unmarked pavement, or faculty/bus lots. Vehicles not parked in designated parking spaces are subject to towing
at the owner’s expense. If someone parks in your space, please see an administrator.
4.) The speed limit on campus is 10 mph in all areas. Students seen driving in a reckless or dangerous manner will
be subject to disciplinary action and/or revocation of their parking privileges.
5.) There will be a fee of $20.00 to replace lost tags.
6.) Students are only to be in the parking lot as they arrive or depart campus. Students are not to sit in vehicles or
otherwise be in the parking lot during the lunch period or any other time of the school day. Students should report
to the appropriate location (class, cafeteria, event) as soon as they arrive on campus.
7.) Students are not to transport other unapproved students in their vehicles while on campus or when leaving campus.
Students who are found transporting unapproved students are subject to disciplinary action and/or revocation of
their parking privileges. Juniors and Seniors who transport underclassman students during lunch will be subject to
disciplinary action and/or revocation of parking privileges.
8.) Students are not allowed to cross Campus Drive or go to the student parking lot during the school day unless they
have written permission from the school office staff or school administrators. Students who are found in the
parking lot during the school day are subject to disciplinary action for skipping class or being in unauthorized areas.
9.) Students must always sign in/out in the attendance office, with a signed note from a parent/guardian, if they leave
campus during the school day (excluding approved juniors and seniors leaving during lunch). Any unapproved
student who leaves campus during lunch or any part of the school day without properly signing out in the
attendance office is subject to administrative disciplinary action.
10.) All students must display or present approved student identification (school-issued student ID card) in parking lot to
school staff as they leave/arrive in the parking lot or other school grounds.
11.) Students are encouraged to lock their vehicles and not to store valuable items in their vehicle. The school or GCS is
not responsible for theft of items from vehicles on campus property.

If the school approves this request, I assume full responsibility for the conduct of my son/daughter while off school grounds
during lunch. I will also assume responsibility for any accidents that may take place as a result of his/her driving an
automobile on or off campus. I understand that if my son/daughter chooses to ride/drive to school rather than make use
of bus transportation, and he/she is late for whatever reason, the tardy/absence will be UNEXCUSED. If he/she is a junor or
senior and is late returning from lunch for whatever reason, the tardy is UNEXCUSED.
