Atomic Emission Spectra
Purpose
To view atomic emission spectra and use a spectrometer to measure the wavelength.
Connections to What You Already Know About in Life
Allover the world there are neon lights glowing in business windows. Unlike traditional light bulbs, there are no
filaments of metal glowing in the bulbs, but each colored bulb is full of a different type of gas. You may see red, green,
pink, purple or even different colors. These colors aren’t just made by colored glass but by an electric current that
causes the gas to glow distinctive colors. Astronomers can also use the colors of different gases to identify what
elements are present in distant stars.
Vocabulary
Spectra, spectrometer, wavelength, frequency, quantum,
Background
The emission spectrum of an element is the spectrum of frequencies of light that are emitted by an element when
its atoms make a transition from a higher energy state to a lower energy state. The frequencies of the spectral lines
correspond to the energy differences between the energy levels of a specific element, As each element has different
energy levels, each element's emission spectrum is unique.
Procedure Section 1
1. To start this activity, click this link for Atomic Emission Spectra _. The lab will load in a new tab. Click back to
this tab to read further instructions and complete the questions below. You can follow along with the instructions
below in the Procedures tab in the lab.
2. The Spectrometer is on the right of the lab table. The emission spectra is in the detector window with a graph of
the Intensity vs 2 (wavelength).
3. Click Save Screen above the Spectra to save an image of the spectra to the Lab Book.
Questions
1, How many distinet lines do you see? 4
‘What are the colors of the lines you see? red, cyan, blue, indigo

2. If you click to the right of the farthest right peak and drag left you will see a blue box pop up. This will help you
zoom the window to fit it to the peak height better. Drag it just higher than the tallest peak. Then hover your
cursor over a peak and it will identify the wavelength (in nm) in the x-coordinate field. Record the wavelength in
the table below for the peaks in the hydrogen spectrum, (Round to whole numbers.) Each wavelength
corresponds to another property of light called its frequency. Use the wavelength value of each of the lines to
calculate its frequency given that v= c/A where c = 2.998 x 10!7 nm/s (2.998 x 108 m/s). The energy (E) of a
quantum of light an atom emits is related to its frequency (v) by E = hv. Use the frequent
value for each line
and h = 6.63 x 104 J's to calculate its corresponding energy. Fill in the values in the data table.

3, Now you will investigate the emission spectra for a different element, helium, Helium is the next element after
hydrogen on the periodic table and has two electrons. Do you think the emission spectra for an atom with two
electrons instead of one will be significantly different than that of hydrogen? Explain your answer.
I think the spectra would be observed to be more as
Helium contains more observable and measurable
particles compared to Hydrogen gas
Procedure Section 2
1, Expand the Samples menu in the Stockroom tab in the tray. Then expand the Gases menu and click on He. This
will replace the H in the sample tube with helium gas. If you hover over the gas sample tube with your cursor it
should read Gas (He). Click Save Screen to save the new spectra to your Lab Book,
Questions
4, How is the visible spectrum for helium different from hydrogen’s spectra?
The spectra for Helium produced 7 lines while that
of Hydrogen gas produced only 4 suggesting that the
spectroneter detected more from Helium compared to
Hydrogen gas
5, Determine the wavelength (in nm), the frequency (in I/s) and the energy (in J) for the peak on the far right.
