Laws of Electromagnetic induction –
Ampere’s circuital law, Faraday’s law and Lenz
law – Dot rule. Magnetic materials, B-H
characteristics. Single phase transformer: ideal
and practical transformer, equivalent circuit,
losses in transformers, regulation and
efficiency. Auto-transformer and three-phase
transformer connections.
FARADAY’S LAW
Ampere's Circuital Law
• Ampere's Circuital Law states the relationship
between the current and the magnetic field
created by it. This law says, the integral of
magnetic field density (B) along an imaginary
closed path is equal to the product of current
enclosed by the path and permeability of the
medium.
Lenz's Law
Lenz's law states that when an emf is generated by
a change in magnetic flux according to Faraday's Law,
the polarity of the induced emf is such, that it produces
an current that's magnetic field opposes the change
which produces it.

The negative sign used in Faraday's law of

electromagnetic induction, indicates that the induced
emf ( ε ) and the change in magnetic flux (δΦB) have
opposite signs. Where, ε = Induced emf δΦB = change
in magnetic flux N = No of turns in coil
HYSTERESIS LOOP
Types of Magnetic Material
Comparison of Hard and Soft Magnets
Advantages of Electromagnet
Disadvantages of Electromagnet
1. Needs external power
2. Needs coil to carry current over core
3. Due to coil weight and size increases
4. Cost also increases due to coil
5. Due to current in coil copper Loss is more
6. Not suitable for very low application

AUTO TRANSFORMER
Auto Transformer

Auto transformer is kind of electrical

transformer where primary and secondary
shares same common single winding. So
basically it’s a one winding transformer.

Theory of Auto Transformer

In Auto Transformer, one single winding is
used as primary winding as well as secondary
winding.
But in two windings transformer two
different windings are used for primary and
secondary purpose.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AUTO AND CONVENTIONAL TRANFORMER
Applications of Auto Transformers

• Compensating voltage drops by boosting

supply voltage in distribution systems.
• Auto transformers with a number of tapping
are used for starting induction and
synchronous motors.
• Auto transformer is used as variac in
laboratory or where continuous variable over
broad ranges are required.

• Power Plant to step up the voltage
• Transmission Line to step up the voltage
• Distribution Line to step down the voltage
• Major Industries consuming bulk power
