SUBJECT: Social Studies
TOPIC: Electoral Processes in Nigeria
LESSON DURATION: 50 min
OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to do the
following:
1. Define Election.
2. State the body responsible for the conduct of elections in Nigeria.
3. State the steps involved in the electoral processes in Nigeria.
4. Define some common terms used during elections.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Pictures of some common activities that occur


during the election, a video of Voting Procedures During An Election.

PROCEDURE:
1. Welcome the pupils to the work centre. (1 minutes)
2. Introduces the lesson by saying: “Today we are going to learn about
the electoral processes in Nigeria.” (2 minutes)
3. He states the objectives clearly. (2 minutes)
4. Introduction (5 minutes)

- Ask students if they know what elections are


- Write down keywords on the board
- Introduce the concept of elections and their importance in a
democracy

5. What are Elections? (7 minutes)

- Define elections and explain why they are important


- Use simple examples to illustrate the concept
- Discuss the different types of elections (local, state, national)

6. The Electoral Process (7 minutes)

- Explain the basic steps in the electoral process:


I. Voter registration
II. Candidate Nomination/Primary Election
III. Campaign
IV. Voting
V. Counting and announcement of results

7. Use a simple flowchart to illustrate the process

Content
Electoral Processes in Nigeria
● Election is the process through which citizens choose who will
represent them in government.
● Election is very important to keep a democratic country functioning
as it gives people the right to select their government.
● The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), set up in
1998, is the electoral body overseeing elections in Nigeria.
Its Chairman is Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
● The following steps are involved in the electoral process in Nigeria:

 Joining a political party. (Compulsory for a candidate)


 Conducting primary elections.
 Campaign
 Voting
 Counting and Announcement of result.
 Swearing in.

Some common terms used during election include:


● Manifesto: A public declaration of a party's ideas and policies
usually used during the campaign.
● Campaign: The process of gathering public support for a candidate.
● Poll: Another term for vote or election.
● Ballot paper: A paper containing a list of all political parties to be
voted for.
