Title of the text: The mobile phone
Aim: to raise pupils awareness on the negative consequences of mobile phones so that they
can use them properly
Objectives: By the end of the course, pupils will be able to:
 Predict ten words that are likely to be in the text
 Answer questions related to the negative consequences of mobile phones
 Express their opinion on the use of cell phones
Prerequisite: pupils know or have already heard about mobile phones.

Aid materials: blackboard, chalk, text, duster
The stages of the lesson
Pre-reading stage

Step 1: Warm up

Greetings +asking and writing of the date


Teacher: what kind of technological inventions do you know?
E.A: radio, television, air conditioner, mobile phone
Teacher: among these technological inventions can you tell me those used for
communication?
E.A: radio, television, mobile phone
Teacher: good! Now tell me which of these means of communication is mostly used?
E.A: mobile phone.
Step 2: Announcement of the lesson

Teacher: today, we are going to study an interesting text titled the mobile phone
The teacher writes the nature and the title of the text on the board.
Step 3: Predictions

Teacher: well! I want you to imagine 5 words that are likely to be in the text. Beware! I don’t
want you to give a word which is in the title.
The teacher writes the pupils’ predictions on the board and tells them to read the text to see
if they are right.
Teacher: well! Now read the text to see if the words you have predicted are in the text and
give one negative aspect of mobile phones.
Teacher: writes the “give one negative aspect of mobile phones on the board”
The teacher starts giving the text to the pupils.
While reading

Step 1: Predictions check and answer to the question

The teacher assesses the predictions with the aid of the pupils and ask them to answer the
question.
Teacher: class, is this word in the text?
If the word is in the text, the teacher keeps it on the board, if not he crosses it. The teacher
proceeds the same way to check all the predictions.
Step 2: Oral activity (3 mns)
Teacher: listen to me carefully, I’m going to say some statements and you will answer orally
by true or false. Is it ok? Let’s start!
Statements:
 Mobile phones aggravate noise
E.A: true
 Mobile phone is also called cell phone
E.A: true
 Mobile phones have no advantages
E.A: false
 Cell phones make driving more dangerous
E.A: true
Step 3: Written activity
Instructions: with your neighbour, read the text and answer the following questions.
The teacher writes the questions on the board.
Questions:
1) What is the text about?
2) According to the text, what is the central idea of cell phones?
3) According to the text, for whom are cell phones productive?

Step 4: Correction of the written activity

E.A 1: the text is about the negative consequences of mobile phones


E.A 2: the central idea of cell phones is that you should be connected to almost everyone and
everything at all times.
E.A 3:mobile phones are productive for salesmen, real-estates agents, etc.
Assessment: the teacher assesses the answers
Post-reading stage

Step 1: Group work

The teacher divides the class into two groups. Each group will defend a position concerning
the activity. The teacher writes the activity on the board.
Activity: nowadays, cell phones have invaded the market of technology and our daily life. For
almost everything we need our cell phones. This makes some people say that we cannot live
without cell phones. Do you agree with them? Justify your opinion.
Instructions: Group A→find three arguments to show that we cannot live without cell phones
Group B→find three arguments to show that we can live without cell phones

Step 2: Correction of the group work

The teacher records the good ideas of the different groups on the board.
After the correction of the group work, the teacher gives a follow up.

Step 3: Follow up Give three(3) negative consequences related to the use of mobile phone in
class.

Step 4: Note taking

Here, the teacher allows the pupils to take down note on their copy books. While pupils are
taking note, the teacher fills the administrative tasks and checks attendance.

Step 5: Closing

The teacher thanks the pupils for their attendance and reminds them to do the homework and
takes his leave.
