IA Prompt: Can new knowledge change established values or beliefs?

Arijan Dino Polic, III4 IB

Word Count: 950
The pursuit of knowledge often leads to new insights that challenge established values and
beliefs. In this TOK exhibition, we will explore how advancements in science, technology, and
social advancements can impact and potentially change long-held values. Through real-life
examples, we will critically analyse the interplay between knowledge and values, and the
implications of changing beliefs on individuals and societies.

Image1: Research on climate change

New scientific discoveries have the potential to challenge established beliefs and values. For
example, the growing body of research on climate change has challenged traditional beliefs
about the environment, sustainability, and humanity's responsibility towards the planet. The
exhibition will delve into the implications of this knowledge on our values and attitudes towards
the environment, and how it has led to changes in environmental policies, resource management
practices, and societal awareness about sustainability.
With the overwhelming evidence of anthropogenic climate change, new knowledge from
scientific research has challenged long-held beliefs about the sustainability of human activities
on the planet. This has led to changing values and attitudes towards the environment, with
increased emphasis on conservation, renewable energy, and sustainable practices. It has also
spurred changes in environmental policies and regulations, such as the Paris Agreement, which
aims to mitigate the impacts of climate change and promote sustainable development on a global
scale. This new knowledge has influenced public awareness and activism, resulting in
movements advocating for environmental preservation, changes in consumer behaviours, and
corporate sustainability initiatives.
The impact of this new knowledge on established values and beliefs extends beyond
environmental policies and practices. It has also led to changing societal norms, cultural
attitudes, and personal behaviours. For example, there is a growing awareness of the need to
reduce individual carbon footprints, leading to changes in consumer choices, such as adopting
plant-based diets, reducing waste, and using public transportation. This shift in values and
behaviours is a direct result of the new knowledge about climate change, and it showcases how
scientific advancements can confront established beliefs and lead to changes in individual and
societal values.

Image2: Advancements in technology, The Growth of AI

Advancements in technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, have raised
ethical questions about the impact on employment and society. This confronts established beliefs
about work, employment, and the role of humans in a technologically driven world. The
exhibition will explore how the advancement of technology has led to changing values and
beliefs about work, job security, and the ethical implications of AI and automation on
employment practices, economic systems, and societal structures.
The rapid development of AI and automation has disrupted traditional beliefs and norms about
work and employment. Automation has the potential to replace jobs in various industries, leading
to concerns about job displacement, income inequality, and societal consequences. This has
challenged established values related to work, such as the belief that traditional employment is
the sole means of earning a livelihood and achieving economic security. It has also led to
changing beliefs about the ethical implications of AI and automation, including concerns about
bias, privacy, and the concentration of power in the hands of a few technological giants. This
further development of AI caused discussions about the need for new forms of employment,
retraining and reskilling programs, and a re-evaluation of the meaning and value of work in a
technologically advanced world. Furthermore, it has spurred debates about the ethical
considerations of AI and automation, including the need for regulatory frameworks,
accountability, and responsible innovation. As technology continues to advance, the interplay
between knowledge and values in the realm of work and employment is likely to evolve, with
potential changes in societal norms, cultural attitudes, and policy approaches.

Image¸3: Changes in societal and traditional attitudes towards sexual orientation

Advancements in social sciences, such as sociology, psychology, and anthropology, have
challenged established beliefs related to identity, and social norms. For example, research on
gender identity and sexual orientation has challenged traditional beliefs about gender roles and
sexual orientation, leading to changing attitudes towards LGBTQ+ rights, acceptance, and
inclusion. The exhibition will explore how new knowledge in social sciences has impacted
established values and beliefs related to gender, race, culture, and identity.
The understanding of gender identity and sexual orientation has evolved significantly in recent
years, challenging traditional beliefs about gender roles and norms. This new knowledge has led
to changing values and attitudes towards LGBTQ+ rights, acceptance, and inclusion. It has
spurred social movements advocating for equal rights, anti-discrimination policies, and changes
in bias towards sexual orientation and gender identity. This has also influenced policies related to
LGBTQ+ rights, such as marriage equality laws and workplace protections. The impact of this
new knowledge on established values related to gender and identity is evident in changing
societal norms, cultural attitudes, and personal beliefs.
Furthermore, advancements in social sciences have also challenged established beliefs and
values related to race, culture, and diversity. Research in fields such as anthropology and
sociology has challenged traditional beliefs about race as a biological concept, and instead,
emphasized the social and cultural construction of race. This new knowledge has led to changing
values and attitudes towards diversity, inclusion, and social justice. It has influenced policies and
practices related to diversity and inclusion in organizations, educational institutions, and public
institutions. It has also prompted discussions about systemic racism, cultural appropriation, and
social inequalities, leading to social movements advocating for change, such as the Black Lives
Matter movement. Continuing, the interplay between knowledge and values is complex and
dynamic. Advancements in science, technology, and social sciences have the potential to
challenge established beliefs and values, leading to changes in individual and societal attitudes,
behaviours, and policies. As our understanding of the world evolves through new knowledge, it
is crucial to critically examine the implications of changing beliefs and values, and strive for
responsible and ethical decision-making in the face of advancements in knowledge
