BELIEF IN PREDESTINATION AND

DIVINE DECREE

Belief in the Predestination and Divine Decree is mentioned in the Iman-e-

Mufassil which says:

"I believe in the fact that everything, good or bad, is decided by Allah Almighty.”

‘Taqdeer’; Good or bad thing happens in the world or what virtuous or evil works
that all is within Allah’s knowledge from eternity and occurs with His will. What is
in His knowledge and written with Him is called ‘Taqdeer’ (Predestination). Allah
Almighty created human beings endowed them common sense and wisdom, which
made human beings superior to all animals. He also graced them with a sort of
power, “Will and Option.” Allah ‫ل‬ َ ‫ع َّز َو‬
ََّّ ‫ج‬ َ has not created man like stone and other
lifeless objects but instead He has granted him wisdom to differentiate between
the good and bad and gain and loss and He has also provided all necessary
paraphernalia which the man needs for actions. Hence, the man will have to give
an account of his doings. It is a misguidance to consider oneself either totally
incapable or all independent. The world is “Aalam-e-Asbaab.” Allah ‫ ُس ۡب َحان َٗہ ََّوتَ َع ٰالی‬has
created one being/thing for the other. There must be a doer or user if there is a
thing. Anmbiya-e-Kiram ‫ َعـلَـ ْي ِه ُمََّّالس َََّلم‬had firm belief in Divine-Destiny but even then
they struggled and taught their followers to do so. What is written on “Lauh-e-
Mahfooz” (protected tablet), “the real unalterable fate”, which will never change.
However, those injunctions which are written on the books of Angels or on the
slates of “Lauh-e-Mahfooz” which are called “Qaza’a-e-Mu'allaq” (fate in
suspension/alterable fate) are hanged in one's favour either by the Blessing of
Allah َُّ‫ َجَلََّّ َجَلََّلَہ‬, intercession of Nabi-ur-Rahmah ‫صلَّىَّهللاَُّ َعلَ ْيهَِّ َو َسلَّم‬
َ , by one's supplications
or supplications of Allah's Saints ُ ‫ َر ِح َم ُه ُمَّالـلّٰـ َّه‬or by one's service to his parents or by
showing kindness to blood relations etc. It is very bad to attribute any evil to
“Taqdeer” or to the “Will of Allah ‫ل‬ َ ‫ع َّز َو‬
ََّّ ‫ج‬ َ .” The injunction to this effect is that one
should attribute his good deed to Allah Almighty and evil, if committed, to his own

self. The affairs of ‘Divine Decree’ are beyond the attainment of common man.
Therefore, these should not be discussed everywhere freely to avert losing one's
‘Eeman’. Hazrat Siddiq-e-Akbar and Hazrat Farooq-e-Azam have forbidden
Muslims to discuss the Predestined Affairs. So we are nothing to talk about such
delicate matters. “Taqdeer” (Predestination) is like the sea which has no bottom.
It is a dark valley that has no inlet. It is the Divine-Secret which is beyond human
comprehension.

Similarly, man, the most supreme creation of Allah ‫ ُس ۡب َحان َٗہَّ َوتَعَ ٰالی‬is no exception to this
Divine-Will. Humans have been granted much more liberty and free will than other
creatures but they too are subservient to the laws of nature. We are free to explore
Allah's Universe and utilize its resources but we have to obey the laws of nature.
We should remember that our Creator ‫ َجَلَّ َّ َجَلَ َّلَ َُّہ‬has knowledge of everything and
command over us and so it should be our duty to submit to His Will. The Holy Quran
reminds us by saying:

“We indeed created man and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to
him: for We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.” (50:16)

This verse simply means that Allah ‫ل‬ َ ‫ع َّز َو‬

ََّّ ‫ج‬ َ knows even the innermost desires and
motives of man better than himself. So it becomes clear that in spite of enjoying
the free will granted by Him, our destinies and decisions are under the ultimate
Divine-Predestination. In fact it is He make provisions even for those who have not
yet born because by His Knowledge and Will He retains the ultimate control of the
whole Universe.
