A fox and a crow both lived in the woods beyond the marketplace. Many people sold food at
the market. It was the perfect place for a pair of thieving animals to find a free meal! One
afternoon, the fox lazed under a bush. With one eye open, he saw the crow snatch a
piece of cheese and fly up onto the low branch of a tree. With both eyes open, the fox hurried
out from under the bush. He looked up at the crow."Hello there, Brother Crow!" he
called."Your feathers are looking quite glossy and fine today!"Crow could not answer. He had a
mouth full of cheese! That did not stop him from tilting his head and looking down at the fox."I
can see how handsome and clever you are as well," the fox went on. "You are beauty and
brains in one package!"The crow puffed up his chest and beamed down at the fox."I've always
thought you were the most beautiful bird in the forest," the fox added. "I'll bet you sing like an
angel. I would love to hear the voice of the most wonderful bird in the land! Would you please
sing for me?"How could the crow refuse? He opened his mouth to sing for the fox. Down fell
the cheese from his beak. Up leaped the fox to catch and eat it!"Thank you, dear Brother
Crow!" he cried with glee. "You may keep your song. I have the cheese, and it's time for me to
run!"Never trust a flatterer.
