ABSTRACT

India's interstate river water disputes are intricate, stemming from legal and constitutional
structures that control the distribution and use of water across state lines. These conflicts,
which are best represented by conflicts like as the Cauvery and Godavari disputes, draw
attention to problems with federalism and governance. Resolutions that seek to strike a
balance between national interests and state sovereignty are made more difficult by the
Constitution, which gives Parliament control over interstate rivers. This study examines the
legal, political, and socio-economic aspects of continuing and resolved conflicts, highlighting
the significance of organizations such as the Interstate River Water Disputes Act of 1956.
Enhancing cooperative governance and institutional changes are among the suggestions made
in order to avert conflicts and promote sustainable water management. The study highlights
how these disputes affect connections between centers of states and offers avenues for
diplomatic conflict settlement that can be successful.
The goal of this thorough analysis is to provide guidance for policy measures that support
cooperative federalism and equitable management of India's water resources.
